Knife discussion

I'm embarrassed to say with all the fishing I've done since being a little kid, I never tried to Filet a fish. 🫢 All my fishing is done on party/ charter boats.
An honest man!

I have always used a 6" Dexter for everything from flounder to tuna. (I do like a 9" to carve a turkey.lol)

I use a pull through sharpener on the water , a steel at the dock and a stone at home.

Many guys over use the pull through. A sharp knife only needs 1-2 pulls to keep the edge.

I like using a 6" also unless it's a fluke or flounder (I get from a friend). I like to use a long thin flexible on flat fish to slide along the backbone. As for sharpening, I also use a pull through on the boat and a diamond steel at the dock. I don't use a stone.

For those of you who like blowfish, we use a 6" Dexter boning knife with the first 1 1/2" of the blade from the handle dulled so as not to cut through the tail meat. The last 4 1/2" to the tip is very sharp. I one motion, you cut through the backbone, flip the tail meat under, pinch the tail meat stub with the dull part of the blade and pull. When on a roll, it takes about 5 seconds per puffer.

This is a great thread. It has given me a reason to start a shopping list for Ward Melville. Hopefully Glenn Luckey will be there.

I have never used a glove. I have had rare accidents but need to consider getting one. I broke the cardinal rule 2 years ago….”Never try to catch a falling knife”. There was blood everywhere. I also have to try a Scalloped blade for the tough scaled fish.

I feel better now too. I have 4 knives. You guys have a collection that makes me feel I can get a few more.

The glove also assists in grabbing slimy fish out of the cooler, and holding them tight as you run the knife into them. You don't have to spend a ton on one. Go to AliExpress and search safety glove or fish-cleaning glove.

Here's an example of what's over there. Around 3 bux (Hint: buy Xtra-Large for your not
Asian-sized hand):

I have never used Ali Express. But since you recommended them I will consider them a "safe site".

The price is cheap enough. Washable or disposable?

They are also available on TEMU. As Lep said, they give you a better grip besides protecting your hand or fingers from cuts. A better grip is a real safety factor.

I must have made 200 transactions on AliExpress - pretty much all reel upgrade parts (handle/knobs, etc.) and some minor around the kitchen/cooking tools/knives as well. Don't like giving the CCP any more money than necessary, but they have the goods and I want them, so . . .

As far as TEMU goes, no thanks. Definite data mining site. Eff them.

Probably Ali and TiKTok as well, but at least I've never heard of anyone having info stolen by Ali. Can't say the same for the other two.

As far as washable - yep. After I'm done with the cutting, I put the dock hose in them and then do the outside, then throw the glove into the boat-washing soapy bucket. A final rinse and let it dry. Been the plan for about 20 years for me.

Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience. I am a online junkie and use TEMU all the time and never had a bad experience. I'm pretty critical of sites. I owned one and we sold 50,000 items a day. All the sites mine data. We did. AliExpress was owned by the Jack Ma group. He owned it under AliBaba until the CCP basically took it over and tossed him out to show him who's boss.. He's back now and mining your data.

Hey Guys. I want to apologize to Lep if it seems I was disagreeing with his guidance towards using AliExpress for really great deals. I did not mean it that way. AliExpress is a really great site and with AliBaba, they are the biggest online sellers in the world. Most of you are not comfortable with going on a Chinese site. Don't be with AliExpress. Lep is 100% correct, there are no worries with purchasing items on AliExpress and Lep has done most of your homework. The deals will blow you away but some items are still cheap Chinese items. But, they are so cheap, you won't get hurt when the ten cent teaser falls apart on the first trip and you still have nine left after you spent $1.00 for the ten. Good news, Lep steers you towards some really fantastic deals and provides links to get there after he does the indepth Lep evaluation. AliExpress is way better than TEMU, although both sites do harvest data. You can see that when you go on the site and it shows you what you were looking at in the past. All the selling sites harvest the data of what you are looking at and stores it. Don't feel uncomfortable with that, you see it all the time on eBay and Amazon as well as AliExpress and TEMU. We used to joke about it on our site. If my neighbor is using our site, I can probably tell you her bra size, cup size, what type of panties she wears along with the color and if she's into strap-ons and latex. We keep that information forever in our enormous bank of servers (computer storage devices). Anything you look at, we store and steer similiar items your way. So, with that, Lep is absolutely correct, you have no worries using AliExpress and it's no different, safety wise, than using eBay or Amazon, however, it might take a little longer to get your items.
