This report is a day late!
Being that was father's day, my son Charles, his son"s Brandon and Zack decided they wanted to go out on the boat for the day.
We piled everything we needed, food, water and tackle into the boat at 7am, stopped at the nearest gas station and topped the tank off.
7:30 we dropped the boat into the water, went to start the motor and no dice, I know the batteries are good, one is new the other is 2 yrs old.
Jiggled the ignition key and the motor fired up, figure's it's the original switch and the last point of failure as everything else on the engine has been replaced.
I have towing insurance and took a chance that it was just an intermittent thing.
So we decided to give it a shot and hope for the best.
We headed to Madison where we fished last weekend and there was an armada of boats when we finally got there.
We nestled in to the fleet and started marking fish at 80 feet, with a southwest wind and the tide going out, we couldn't hold bottom with our 6 oz fluke rigs.
We were drifting at 3 mph so I threw the drift sock over, well that didn't work, it slowed us down to 2.5 mph still to fast for 6 oz, scoping out 300 feet was the best we could do.
I have heavier setups, but didn't bring them.
My son Charles hooked up with a nice cbass, my grandson Zac hooked up with a mystery fish, we thought at first he was stuck on the bottom, I grabbed the rod and I could feel the fish fighting.
I gave the rod back to Zac and told him to keep fighting the fish, about 10 minutes into the fight he lost it, brining the line back in, his top rig which had a salmon color 6 in gulp on it was bitten in half, mystery over.
We stuck it out till 1 pm and decided to head back to fish the wall at New Haven Harbor, stopping a few places where a few boats were fishing and nada, in the meantime the switch never gave us anymore problems.
We arrived at the east wall of New Haven Harbor and started our drift, the tide was slack and the wind made for a nice drift, we picked up a few porgy's and on short fluke.
The tide changed, the wind picked up and you guess it, we had wind against tide, now we were no longer drifting, very frustrating to go from to much drift to none at all.
At 4pm we called it quits and headed for the barn.
In spite of the conditions and the switch problem, I really enjoyed fishing with my Son and grandsons, I don't see my grandsons as much as I would like, they are 18 and 16 yrs old, Brandon is going to Western State for business management , Zac is going to be a soccer pro someday, he was already asked to sign on and get a free ride to a prestigious college but when the found out he was only a junior in high school they couldn't believe it, the kid is 6' 4; and still growing. ?
Well maybe next weekend. ?
Tight lines everyone, stay safe and healthy.
p. s. I ordered a new ignition switch from yamaha, will have it thursday
not taking any chances that it was just on time thing.
