What a week I'm having, first my central air let go, called out Climate Partners to take a look, got screwed, long story.
Coming home from work in my New Highlander, a rock hits my windshield and now it has to be replaced, 2k miles on the vehicle.
Made plans all week to make the trip from Milford Ct to Montauk. Yesterday doing a check on the boat, found number one battery to be dead, not wanting to take chances I went out and bought a new one instead of charging it and hope it would be ok.
Went through the engine and just changed all the filters and spark plugs, changed the lower unit oil, topped off the 2 cycle oil take, took 3 gallons of spare oil, were were going to refuel at Montauk.
Loaded up the boat Saturday, plans were to launch at 5am Sunday morning.
We launched this morning at 5am and we were on our way, did 3900 rpms about 26 miles an hour, for the most part it was an ok ride till we hit the race, we were in sight of Montauk when the engine alarm went off, at first I wasn't sure what it was, the motor slowed right down and I turn off the key, turned the key back on no alarm, looked at the water coming out of the piss hole and it was fine, just replaced the water pump last year, has to be no oil, took off the cover and sure enough, no oil was getting to the reserve tank, hit the by pass switch, no oil, either the strainer was clogged or the oil pump in the main tank was bad, so we made the decision to turn around after filling the reserve tank by hand, what a mess, I had more oil on the motor than in.
We stopped every 40 minutes on the way back in to fill the reserve tank, to add insult to injury, we ran into a school of Albies, I stopped long enough for my son to hook up only to loose it at the boat, then they were gone.
Back to Milford, brought the boat home, took the oil tank out and glad I did, the holding bracket was rusted up pretty bad, emptied the oil out and started trouble shooting, turned out to be the strainer, 12$ part, my bad for not checking it, spent the rest of the day looking for a strainer, in the mean time, I cleaned up the tank, noticed there were globs of oil in the little bit of oil left in the tank, so I mixed it with a little gas and cleaned it out, went on line to price out a new bracket, 176$, so I sand blasted the old one and gave it 2 coats of por 15.
Tomorrow I hope to find at least one Marina open top buy the strainer, I ordered 2 on line but won't see them till late next week.
It could have been worse, my younger son took it in stride and we worked on the boat till 2 pm.
The one thing I took for granted I should have checked first, It won't happen again, So CaptMike, that's why I didn't call you.
