Was a bang up day today. "The Donald" floored me when he sat on a rock and asked for his rake. While seated, he dug up a dozen clams. I've never witnessed "Gentlemanly Clam Digging" until, just when you thought you've seen everything. Hail Clam King Old Mud!!

We limited out on clams and oysters, under some of the early March weather imaginable and had some great laughs. You folks missed out!!

So I get that pictures can be deceiving
You mention "limits of clams and oysters"
Is that wire basket of clams bigger than it looks?
Was the picture taken after the crew split up the catch?
Or is the per man limit minuscule?

1 Peck of shellfish per person. Wire basket is a peck, that was our clams, and the bucket and bowl hold the 1 peck of oysters. Pic taken during the the loot was being split up.

We kept more oysters than clams. You just pick them up, while the clams are work, at least for me. I've yet to learn the Sit and Collect technique of Clam Jedi Master Mud...

So I double checked the limits for my jurisdiction- Town Of Southampton.
I have to admit I was a bit off in my understanding of the reg's but was always still in compliance.
With a recreational permit you are allowed one half bushel of "shellfish per day"
It goes on to say, of that half bushel no more than 100 can be hard clams.
My bad in missing that and thinking I could have a half bushel of hard clams.
99.99% of the time I've gone as a "rec", I've had my wife and son with me so the limit is then 1-1/2 bushels of "shellfish" and 300 hard clams for the 3 of us.
NEVER did we exceed 300 hard clams even if my 1/2 bushel sized basket is full.

Interesting, the regulations are funny because there's always a back story. In Maine, nobody can figure out why anyone would want anything other than "steamers", soft shells in Maine, for clams. so that peck rec limit is a ton of steamers, there are no "numbers" limits. Steamers are dug in estuaries which are under Town jurisdictions. The funny thing is that my hard shells lie across a "conservation action" border, which didn't open until Jan 1. I called up the town to ask about that back in October and they said, "Oh, you want THOSE clams, go ahead and dig away!!" Oysters are also closely protected within that peck limit.

If I wanted skimmer clams, hen clams in Maine, I could dig up bushels, since the digging for these guys is on the outside beaches. I will do it soon to put away some bait for haddock fishing, but I've got to drive, the state doesn't bother testing by me because there are still houses with "Overboard" septic discharge so they won't test, just close everything down in these areas.

I remember the "good old days" of no LI regulations. One day a buddy and I dug up over a full garbage can full of necks - chowders in an hour!! If we went home then, we'd be doing yard work, so we sat in the boat drinking beer watching young lovelies water ski around us for a couple of hours. Better than cutting the lawn...
