My lower unit was almost filled with water !!!!

Went to change the lower unit oil in my 2014 Evinrude Etec 50 HP , opened the screws and nothing but water flowed out. Absolutly horrified seeing that . I took the engine to All Island Marine in Oceanside to extend the shaft to 25 inch's last January , they drained the lower unit oil and replaced it. I looked at the screws and none of them were installed with plastic seals . Bum job , looks like the mechanic didn't have the seals and said what the heck and sent me on my way. I guess the lower is ruined and now I gotta buy a new Outboard because I'm not sinking any more money into this used engine. You go to a marina you expect them to do the job right . I'll go there tommorrow and they'll say get lost , we walk over you little people . Amazing that engine ran for the whole summer with all that water .

Are you sure the lower unit is no good?

I understand water makes a crappy lubricant, but if it wasn't making noises and still shifting I'd get it pressure tested and if it passes, fill it with oil and see how it runs. Run it a bit and check for metal.

You may have gotten lucky.

It ran fine right thru the season , no problems shifting at all or any noise. It ran wide open for a few minutes each trip and was fine. I checked the magnetic drain screws and no metal chips , I was looking closely at that. I'm checking that oil again and put it into a glass and see if water rises to the top. Last trip I went out late November and trolled for hours , ran wide open for a few minutes and all seemed fine. Thanks.

Did you contact anyone at the marina? I would imagine you would have a receipt detailing the work that was done on the engine. Interesting that you say it ran all season without a hitch. But seeing fuel / oil in the water should have been a clue to at least have it checked out.
