Scientists used NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Terra and Aqua satellites to discover the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt (GASB), which started in 2011. It has occurred every year since, except 2013, and often stretches from the west coast of Africa to the Gulf of Mexico.

An unprecedented belt of brown algae stretches from West Africa to the Gulf of Mexico--and it's likely here to stay. Scientists at the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg's College of Marine Science used NASA satellite observations to discover and document the largest bloom of macroalgae in the world, dubbed the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt, as reported in Science. The answer is yes. Several years ago someone suggested harvesting the sargassum and selling it for various uses. The South ATLANTIC FISHERY MANGMENT COUNCIL quickly adopted a fishery management plan for sargassum that effectively made it impossible for them to to do that.

Well not really Larry. That sea of weed has been there for eons. (So i have been told). That Sargarssum sea is an ecosystem all it's own. Even our elvers come from the breeding Eels there. Hundreds of species live and die there giving nutrition to others. Life follows that weed.

Mother Nature will take care of it as she has always done.

Cellie, yes some years are more heavy than others but even Cristo Columbus found that sea.Yes it would be good if we could harvest at least what's washed ashore.( If Only for the sake of making a pretty place for the swimming folk) But as we have shown in the past helping Mother Nature is not our long suit. Anything we do for money will eventually become corrupt.

Sorry to have such a dim view on my fellow man but I've seen so much $hit go down the pike that sometimes i can read the writing on the wall before it's even written. :)

Anyway, good word comparison on the Sargassum. A young mind at work. ;)

I'm going to work now.

Yes Mudman. good comparison yes. I need it to recall the difference between the Sargasso Sea & “Sargassum”... could have used the word sarcasm but it wouldn’t have been as romantic...

Also, I witnessed the marine life at the waters edge while swimming, alot of small tropical ? fish and ? worms etc, doing their thing while seagulls calmly paddling around picking off the tidbits... cellfish...

Have a sparkling day, be safe... cellie...

Come to think of it, in the backyard of my place miles west of the beach. I started a earthworm box for fresh water fishing and did use a couple of buckets of sargassum into the mix... cellie...

Something else. In nature the pile up of sargassum is normal, it most likely assist with the anchoring of coconuts ? which in turn helps stabilizes the sand/beach and it turn helps the multi million $$$ ongoing erosion problem near Miami especially... the pile up may assist with nesting turtles too... cellfish...
