New Bluefish Regs?

Since it is just about that time:

Currently the bluefish regulations for New York State remain unchanged (as of March 31, 2020). You can keep 15 fish total. The first 10 at any size. The next 5 must be 12 inches or greater.

The federal regs however are 3 at any size for recreational boats, and 5 of any size on for hire boats.

As long as you stay within 3 miles you can load up on snappers to live line or just take 3 if you fish the reefs or Cholera bank. Kids can still catch them from the dock and bring a bunch home for dinner.

I bet that by the end of June, when the smallest snappers are "catchable" the regs will change to just three, period.

I think the NYSDEC hasn't updated all regs yet. Both the asmfc and mac approved the same reduction. So the rules are the same for both inshore and offshore.

The new regs are now on the DEC web site, bluefish are open all year, no size limit , bag limit is 3 fish. Anglers on boats for hire, whenever that happens, are permitted a bag limit of 5 fish.

I understand the logic that someone with a private boat is likely to be fishing more often than somebody on a party and the PB's need to be able to entice fares to make it worth there while but I think its BS to have different regs. My average cost per trip based on all yearly expenses is as much if not more than what somebody pays to jump on a PB for a day.

I can't remember what I did.

I have caught just one snapper after trying for a couple of hours yesterday and today and it was small. I have never seen it this bad especially this late in the summer. Maybe it should have just been a moratorium.
