Not fluking!

So, I saw a few things on Saturday and Sunday so today I grabbed 3 spinning rods and a plug bag and snuck out solo in the skiff around 4. Took my eyes a bit to adjust and some time to find some bass but did find them. Managed to plug 3 of them, 22-23" specimens and around 8 bluefish. The bass were very finicky and had to really slow down the small pencil popper. Could not get them on anything else. All three caught on the back hook, so they hit out of aggravation. Followed the bait on an outgoing tide and drifted into a bluefish feeding area. Real subtle, swirls, not a massive blitz, but a lot of them. They were finicky too, as I had to go down to a 1/2 oz bucktail with a 4 inch white grub and a slow retrieve. Although they were swirling, that buck had to be down. That dialed them in and had a bunch until I had to leave.
Funny moment as the boat is drifting backwards and I am on the front of the boat casting. I am at a pause and just happen to look down in 4 feet of water and damn, that ray is as wide as the boat! Kind of startled me and I moved away from the edge!
Going to start doing this more often, I have some spots deeper in the bay that should hold fish during the dark / first light hours.
