Personal experience:
For years I was passing the APFT without working out, doing the same exercises, etc. I hit 38 and failed. From then on I had to eschew weight lifting and instead do simple pushups, and start running a timed two mile course in my neighborhood. Point is the body ages gracefully, but it does age. Virtually every old pitcher the hated Yankees hired was a flop by the second year, if not right away.
