NC Friend who just returned up here to his cottage from NC last weekend wanted to get out once before Lee screwed things up tomorrow. I coerced him into taking me along by offering to show him a spot by me that's been pretty consistent, although the tide dictated an 08:00 start time, something way past my comfort zone of 1st light.
Got to "the spot" and it wasn't too long before the bass were looking at my lure, but not his. I realized that soon after we started, he took off his popper and started playing with soft plastics. Once a third fish swiped at my lure, he stuck a proper, sinking popper on and started to get some fish activity. Pretty soon I was boating my 3rd 24" fish, while he was frustrated as none of the interested fish were hitting the plug. This gave me an opportunity I've wanted to answer for weeks, whether or not my customized lures were better than the default factory models. I had an extra custom job and tossed it to him saying, "Tie this on", and suddenly he started getting solid hits, although it took him some time to finally boat a 24" fish.
I eventually landed a 28" fish, and then another 23", while my host ended up with the single 23. The 23" fish was part bird, as after getting hooked it took off into the air, almost colliding with a passing by gull! I started to feel like a horrible guest so I made sure that he kept that custom CC, hoping that he'd wean himself off the soft plastics and embrace a sinking popper. Not a bad result for a 2 hour sortie.
