It's the first movie they ( not Hollywood, looks independant) made about the U Boat War off the United States. Hitler sent a Wolf Pack of U Boats armed with V1 Rockets to attack NYC in April 1945 , the US Navy learned of the plan and sent out a fleet of Destroyers to hunt them down.
Not only V1 Rocket attacks, a U Boat sat on the bottom right outside NY Harbor in April 1945 with orders to shoot canisters of nerve gas into the heart of Manhatten. Hitler was furious about the bombing of Dresdan and ordered U Boats to attack NYC. Generals talked Hitler out of it and the U Boat with the nerve gas disappeared for 3 months and surrendered in Argentenia , 3 months after the war in Europe ended. The U Boat crew threw the deck gun into the ocean and the U Boat was a rusting hulk like it was set on fire. No doubt the crew jettisoned the deck gun/set fire to the UBoat to hide all evidence they were carrying nerve gas to attack NYC. Another true story.
U boats sailed off Long Island until the last day of the war. U853 actually surfaced to charge it's batteries in heavy fog about 3 miles NE of Montauk Point and a Squadron of Grumman Avenger torpedo bombers on a training mission spotted it on the surface a day before WW 2 ended. The Grumman Avenger Pilot who saw the U boat was interviewed on You Tube and explained what he saw. Hours later the U853 sank the Blackpoint off Rhode Island.
U Boats were able to come very close to the US shore because the US Navy knew it was suicide to attack ships in shallow water and the Navy didn't actively patrol for U Boats close to shore. Kreigsmarine regulations said a U boat couldn't attack ships in less than 240 feet of water. Destroyers stayed with the Convoys.
