Oysters

Hi,
I took some oysters off of some mussel beds at low tide. Any concerns with eating oysters that sit out of the water at low tide?

Not an issue as far as I know thats how I use to get them years ago never had a problem with them

No problem at all. AAMOF the first batch of wild oysters I ever got was from a bed in Mt. Sinai. My buddy and I were duck hunting in his layout boat. As the tide went out we found ourselves high and dry on a mussel, DUH OYSTER bed. Our thoughts were, "Better fresh oysters than fresh duck!!"

I think it is illegal to harvest now. I think the season ended (unless you have a commercial license was May 1st.

We have a ton growing in the Byram River in CT. It’s brackish water.

Hi Boat Guy, Harvesting still allowed in NY. BUT, some areas do have seasonal closure and May 1 is a common start date. For example all of Mount Sinai harbor is closed for the season. The parts of Stony brook I was in are open.

Not for nothing, but when water temps get above 65 °F I wouldn't bother getting oysters for eating raw. The start getting ready for reproduction and lose their best flavor...

Glad you posted that Bud. At 65 degrees lots of things happen in those bays and it's not all good.
