Peanuts Galore

Boat is in the repair yard so i haven't been fishing, but decided i'd give it a go and try a surf spot I've always wanted to try. Started around 6pm at the first spot with a talkin popper and had no luck. At the next spot i found the bait, massive schools of peanut bunker with fish blowing up on them. I must've made 100 casts but could not get a follow let alone a hookup. Only came with a popper so i didn't have another lure to throw. I think a shad body would've worked well. Anyway after the sun set i decided to throw some bunker chunks and see if that would entice these fish. Ended up catching 2 blues in the 3-5 lb range and a bunch of dogfish. Not bad for first time summer brooklyn surf fishing i'd say. I'll have to try again with some better lures.

Any suggestions of what to use when the fish are on peanuts?

3-4" Krocodile, 1-3oz Kastmaster , AVA017's and the shads as you mentioned.
Metals will give you extra distance that you may need in the surf.

The lesson learned here is always be prepared for anything. Especially this time of year. It doesn't sound like they were bass or blues so your best bet would be the lures mentioned above. I would also add a3/4 oz deadly dick to the mix as that's the only thing I'll get Albie's to bite when they're on peanuts.

Great report thanks for posting.

Definitely lesson learned, i'll probably try again tomorrow. I have a floating sp minnow lying around the house i want to try out as well. I don't think it was albies or bonito/spanish but perhaps. Like you said always better to be prepared for anything.

My thinking is if it were a bluefish or striped bass, they would have jumped on anything when they get going like that!

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. When they're locked in on peanuts sometimes they won't touch anything else. I was still surprised though. A 5" blue talkin popper should've worked.
