Planning for a trip to fish the Gulf of Mexico from Venice, Louisiana AND/OR North Carolina in March

Hello folks,

I am going to have a bunch of time to take off in March (otherwise I will lose it). I have always been interested in trying to fish in the Gulf of Mexico. I would love to catch some of those allison yft and snapper/grouper fish on the oil rigs. Unfortunately, I have found that red snapper season won't be open in March, but the the big yft tend to be better in the winter months anyway. My concern is, what the weather may be down there in March. Does anyone have any experience with fishing down there that time of the year? Is there a "windy season" I have to look to avoid? I'd hate to make the 1,500-mile ride to sit there a couple weeks and only get out a day or two because of winds.

Then, after fishing the Gulf, I'm considering heading over to NC and do some bottom fishing out of Sneads Ferry/Bogue Inlet/Beaufort. Again, is anyone familiar with fishing in that area off NC between Frying Pan and Cape Lookout shoals that time year? What are the typical weather conditions I could expect there in the month of March?

If the weather is lousy that time of year in both places, I'm just going to go fishing with friends in Florida! 8-)

Thank you,
