My Son Charles and I decided to take a shot at Port Jeff, was going to run to Plum Gut but the forecast told me otherwise.
Before we launched we stopped and gassed the boat up, I noticed that my 10 micron gas filter was changed last year 7/20/20 so I decided to change the filter when we got back.
Although I don't put a lot of hrs on my motor I figured better safe than sorry.
We arrived at the ramp in Milford and to my surprise there were several boats waiting to launch, never had this problem before, as each boat launched and another took their place, it was our turn and my son backed the boat down, the tide was extremely low and I was concerned that we may not have enough ramp to launch.
Backing down and the tires of my truck in the water, ( good thing I undercoated my truck this april with por 15) the boat did not have enough water, damn bunk trailers lol.
I told my son to pull forward back down fast and hit the brakes, well after 6 attempts and everyone watching and commenting, I finally said, hey shit happens, and with that the boat broke loose from the bunk and into the water with me in tow, I thought for sure I was going swimming lol.
Off we go, over to Port Jeff, when we arrived we found several boats and 3 Party Boats close to shore, the wind was out of the SW 5 to 10, it was easily 10 at the time.
I dropped my line over and immediately hooked up with an 18" fluke, I thought hey this may be a good day.
We picked away at short fluke for about 2 hrs and decided to run to can 9. The wind was picking up and an occasional gust here and there made the drift very fast, we were using 4 oz jigs, ever those had a hard time holding bottom.
Can 9, same thing with robins filling in the gaps, stayed for about an hr and moved to can 7.
Can 7, the same, we fished all around the area and nothing, at 5 pm we started to pack up when my son hooked into something big, we went over an edge from 25 feet to 90.
The rod was bent over and pulling drag, not sure what he has time will only tell. 10 minutes later my son has a 5 foot sand shark at the side of the boat, I was like wow, I didn't think they would be around at this time, as I reach down and grab the leader the shark rolled and broke it taking my 4 oz jig, gulp and teaser with him, somewhere there is a 5 foot sand shark trolling my rig lol
We packed it in and headed home, it's pretty sad that we had more fun trying to get the boat off the trailer that we did fishing. ??
This morning I changed out the filter, the one that was wrapped in plastic was already rusting up, these were old filters my friend gave me when he worked at spellmans.
The new ones come in boxes now, probably because of the fact the ones sealed in plastic were prone to rusting if stored for a long time.
So, the second week of July we are headed up to Rhode Island, we plan to head over to Montauk if the conditions allow it, otherwise we will fish around Block.
I finished putting my dual spare tire setup on my trailer and it worked out great. pics to come.
Tight lines everyone, stay safe, stay healthy.
p.s. no pics of fish but one pic of the gas that came out of the filter I changed, it's crystal clear, good thing!!
