Protecting reels while underway

What do you use to protect your offshore reels from spray while underway? Are the neoprene reel covers good for this? Would these covers actually trap moisture under the cover and actually be harmful to the reel? I have seen some wrap plastic bags around the reel also. Is this ok? I want to protect my reels and especially my electric reel.

Spray isnt going to harm your reel unless you fail to rinse it we when you get home.
If you insist, Keep the reels in your bag in the cabin until your ready to fish.

One of my anal fishing friends has Melton reel covers and he's swears by them.

For smaller casting reels, the smallest Palmarius covers are great.

I like the old Penn yellow vinyl covers. Keeps the spray off the reels, and dry as a bone.

Call me an old Curmudgeon, BUT something seems very wrong to me if I'd be concerned about covering my reels to protect them from spray while underway. Does that mean I should also cover them while fishing lest they get some spray from line running through the guides???

One of my criteria for buying equipment is their ability to stand up to the abuse from hard fishing, and having to protect them from spray would be an immediate non-starter for me...

Depending on your vessel, and the sea conditions, your rods/reels can experience much more than just a “spray” of salt water. The long treks to and from the offshore grounds can sometimes literally turn your cockpit into a very intense salt water shower. The drenching amount of salt water the outfits can experience is probably equal to submerging the reels in the salt water for an extended period. Most reels are not designed for this type of abuse so better to keep them out of “sprays way,” and use a good quality reel cover.

Extended offshore trips I get, but not for fluke reels for the bay, which I have seen being covered...

Maybe I've been doing it wrong but after a good day of fishing, I dont mind my rods and reels being doused with ocean spray. I always rinse everything thoroughly at home regardless. My rods are immaculate and reels work as smoothe as the day I bought them (for the most part)(Newells excluded...LOL)
