Pt. Jefferson fun

Fished Pt. Jefferson harbor Saturday with my grandson, I love/hate when he outfishes me lol, soooo much fun! More fluke than I've seen anywhere else so far this season. Mostly shorts but we were able to bring home a couple for dinner. My buddy caught some of the largest sea robins I've seen in a long time (anyone know the different species, Orange and Brown? Totally different mouths and the brown has a dark spot on it's dorsal fin) The wind kept us in the harbor for most of the day but it did drop out late afternoon. We moved out front by buoy 11 and it was nice to see a bunch of fish come up. Its been a while since this area had any decent fluke fishing. They were spitting up small sand eels, I just hope the bait sticks around and the fishing gets even better. Tight lines

Those are called sculpin

Those are called sculpin
Could be BennyV but I not convinced they're sculpin. The fish we caught very closely resembled our typical sea robin in every way except their coloring is more brown than orange and their mouths are not nearly as large. It was almost impossible for me to lip these fish. The smaller head is easily recognizable from the wide, broad head of the more orange species we catch inshore here in NY. I was looking at the gurnard species but don't seem to be able to find this bugger. I'll try to take a picture next time out.

I saw one of those very large sea Robin's taken in porpoise channel Friday evening. Had taken Millers take out down there for dinner and enjoy the view and weather. Guy was fishing had zero idea what he was doing and what it was. Saw him struggling to bring it in finally fot it over the rail I was like at the size of the sea robin. After 2 minutes of these 3 knuckleheads looking at it trying to figure out what to do I walked over and took it off the hook and threw it back. The one guy that knew English asked what it was I told him also told him look online or go look at the paper they had posted at the dock that tells you the fish in the area and current limits. He said thanks and that was it. But that thing was really big and much darker than the sea Robin's I usually see.

I was out a few times in the past two weeks in the Port Jeff area. I caught many of the what I call small mouth Sea Robins. I usually see them more in deep water in the Middle Grounds area. I was surprised to catch more of the small mouth robins then the usual robins. They may very well be called Sculpin, but I ran into a DEC guy at ramp and he specifically asked me how many of each species of sea robin I caught, so they are in the Sea Robin family for sure. Many small fluke out there.
