R.I.P.

The first time I met Gary Brooker, at his well-appointed house in Surrey in the late 1980s, he was typically matter-of-fact about how he had come to buy the property. “‘A Whiter Shade’ paid for this,” he told me. That was Gary: pragmatic, witty, and unpretentious.

When he mentioned during that conversation that he would sometimes go fishing with his neighbor Eric Clapton, it wasn’t for effect. He was simply referring to a friend, fellow musician, and bandmate. When news broke that he had lost his fight with cancer at the weekend, those mates were out in force to pay tribute – and what a network of work colleagues and admirers they were, from Ringo Starr to Billy Joel, and Stevie Van Zandt to Yusuf/Cat Stevens.

Rest in Peace "Hot Lips"...

You know she's the Hot Lips from the movie not the TV show, right? Just checking.

I thought I recognized her name tho. Sally was in the second Star Trek pilot.

Got the call this morning. My wife’s uncle who lives a few blocks away passed away early this morning. RIP IRVING FARBER.
He was one of the funniest people I’ve ever met.

Bobbie Nelson, Willie Nelson’s sister and a member of his Willie Nelson and Family band for more than 50 years, died Thursday morning at age 91. She was described as having died “peacefully and surrounded by family,” and no cause of death was given.

“There’s just no way to explain how lucky I am to have a good musician in the family,” Willie Nelson told the Austin American-Statesman in 2007. “Whenever I’ve needed a piano player, I’ve had Sister Bobbie right there. … Whenever our band plays, Sister Bobbie is the best musician on the stage.”

A week late, but Mitchell Ryan, an actor known for his role as the heroin-dealing retired general in “Lethal Weapon,” the soap opera “Dark Shadows,” and the rich father in Dharma and Greg died at his home in Los Angeles from heart failure. He was 88.
