Something that strikes home: LOVED Newhart!!

Bob Newhart, Comedy Icon, Dies at 94

Award-winning actor and comedian Bob Newhart, known for his television sitcom, diverse film roles and deadpan comedic delivery, has died, according to reports. He was 94.

His publicist told multiple outlets that he died after a series of short illnesses.

Newhart was born George Robert Newhart in Oak Park, Illinois, to George David Newhart and Julia Pauline Burns. He was one of four children.

Newhart earned a business degree in management from Loyola University in Chicago before he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War until 1954.

In 1955, Newhart started a job as an accountant, but quickly got bored with his work. He began calling his friend Ed Gallagher and improvising comedy routines until someone suggested recording and syndicating them.

At first, the pair’s recordings were unsuccessful and, after Gallagher took a job in New York, Newhart spent time doing voiceovers and commercial work as he continued writing his own material.

Eventually, a friend arranged a meeting for Newhart with the newly-launched Warner Brothers Records. The company offered him a contract after hearing Newhart’s material, which led to the release of “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart,” the first comedy album to hit No. 1 on the charts.
