Discussing the catch of the day: the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) reported that members of the Hudson River Estuary Program fisheries staff recently caught a 220-pound sturgeon measuring over six feet in length.

The NYS DEC identified the fish as an Atlantic sturgeon, captured last week under a National Marine Fisheries Service endangered species research permit. The Atlantic sturgeon is an endangered, anadromous fish species, meaning it spends most of its life in the ocean but migrates to the Hudson River to spawn during this time of year.

This remarkable catch was part of an annual survey that has been conducted since 2006 during May and June to monitor the trends in the Atlantic sturgeon population.
