Glad I went to a "live" class over the past two days. Great instructor, decent venue and the instructor brought real life scenarios to the class. Excellent reminders and will really be more cognizant operating my vessel.

So I ended up taking the TowBoat US online course for free even though Im not a member
It was cheaper to get the anchor added to my NYS drivers license than to pay for 2 laminated cards
I did the license request as soon as I completed the course and it came in the mail in a little over a week
I printed a copy of the completion certificate and put that in a zip lock in my boat back pack and downloaded it my cell phone as well

I did not have to give them either
When I completed the course there was a link to get an updated license with an anchor on it and that was a few bucks cheaper than paying for 2 laminated cards

Okay, I took the course again a few years ago, and no such link. I'll try to dig up the certificate.

As an FYI I just looked at my certificate and realize its actually a temp good for 90 days so you got no choice but to either by the laminated cards for $15 or get license stamp for $13

Thanks. My class was CG Aux. Hopefully the certificate wasn't temporary, but I'll have to dig it up and see what it says.

I teach the NY State Safe Boating Class. Once you pass the class you receive a temporary Safe Boating Certificate. As stated, they are vaiid for 90 days once signed by the instructor.
I had the pleasure of signing 11 safe boating certiifcated for a class that ended last evening.

Help my dumb @$$ out here. If the course is good for life, why does the certificate have an expiration date? Or does a permanent one come in the mail later?

AVENGER-no dumb questions, always glad to assist

Its a temporary certification (should be a white piece of paper signed by your instructor). NY State charges a $10 fee for a permanent certification if you are 18 yrs or older. Its a one time fee and you will be contacted via the e-mail address that you provided when you registered for the class. Once the $10 fee is paid. You will be mailed your permanent certification. You can also add your safe boating certificate to your drivers license. DMV places a blue anchor on the upper right side of your license.
The fee request will happen once your instructor has submitted all class files and paperwork

The permanent certification is currently valid for a lifetime. The temporary is valed for 90 days
The temporary CANNOT be replaced. Take a photo of it and keep it in your phone
