Salty Sal's Long Island Sound Report - October 21, 2025

The Sound is finally calming down after that blow, and the tog are waiting. The water's still a little stirred up, but it's clearing, and the bite is on. It's that time of year, folks. The water's cooling, the days are getting shorter, and the fish are putting on the feedbag before they make their move. Let's get into it.

The Word on the Water

The big news is the blackfish bite. It's been lights out from the western Sound all the way to the east. The fish are in shallow, from 10 to 30 feet of water, and they're chewing. The shore-bound guys are getting their licks in, and the boaters are having a field day. The bass are still around, with some big fish being taken on topwater plugs and jigs. The porgy bite is still going strong, and there are some big sea bass to be had in the deeper water. The New Moon tide is going to get things moving this week, so expect the bite to be on fire.

Western Sound

It's all about the blackfish in the western Sound. We're seeing some real trophy-class fish being taken in as little as 4 to 10 feet of water. The key has been light jigs and fresh green crabs. The fish are holding tight to the rockpiles and wrecks, so you've got to be right on top of them. The bass are still around, with some schoolies and a few keepers being taken on topwater plugs in the early morning and late evening.

Central Sound

The central Sound is a mixed bag right now. The blackfish bite is strong, with fish being taken on jigs and rigs. The bass are chasing bait, with some big fish being taken on topwater plugs and jigs. The porgy and sea bass bite is still going strong in the deeper water. The key is to find the birds and you'll find the fish.

Eastern Sound

The east end is starting to see a good push of bass, with fish to 35 pounds being taken on diamond jigs in the rips. The blackfish bite is also starting to heat up, with some good fish being taken on the rockpiles. The albies have been a little hit-or-miss, but they're still around. The key is to be in the right place at the right time.

Sal's Summary

This is the time of year we live for. The fishing is on fire, and it's only going to get better. The blackfish bite is the best it's been in years, and the bass are starting to show up in big numbers. Get out there and get in on the action. You won't be disappointed. Just remember to be safe, and leave some for the next guy.
