I own many Shimano reels and I'm ready for a new spinner. Does anyone have any hands-on experience with an Exsence? I'm hesitant to fork out $500+ as I'm not sure why it's in that $$$ category.

Any opinions are appreciated.

Yep, here's my opinion: Its made of magnesium. No effin' thanks.

Not for SW, anyway. Last time I took in a magnesium reel for a “basic tuneup,” it literally fell apart. The screws were pretty much all that was holding it together. THAT made for an awkward phone conversation with the owner. I have the pix somewhere, I think. I'll have to find them. That guy never did send me any more work. And to think I never charged him a dime for any of his reels over the years. Oh well, a big loss.

In FW? Good to go. But I would probably buy a Certate before this reel. Or a Twin Power. Both are super-nice reels that can be used in both SW and FW.

I would not go near a magnesium reel for saltwater either.

I owned a 2500 Daiwa Certate and sold it and now have a barely used Certate 4000 that will be up in the Flea market within a week. There OK but just not the reel for me.Have friends that love them but I just do not like the transfer of power in the handle on the Certates.I thought it was the high gears in the 2500 model so I bought a low gear 4000 and its the same.Im not buying into Daiwas Moncoque design, the concept sounds good but Im not impressed.Plus I have a bad bearing on my Ballistic 2500 after 5 trips so Im not so sure how good mag seal is either.

I replaced the smaller of the two Certates with a new Shimano Twin power 2500FD.I could not be happier, reels a little pricey but I caught a lot of fish with it and some really big teen size tog on it last season and it performed flawless.

If looking for a slightly lighter version Twin Power I would look at these new XD version that's coming out this March. It gets confusing now that Shimano is offering 3 Twin power reels. The FD,The XD and the heavy duty SW.The XD seems very similar to the FD with a extra bearing and Magnum light rotor (CI4+) so it takes less force to turn the handle and the start up inertia is quicker. Not really sure why I need that, but I like the blue/silver color the slightly lighter weight and they have nice handle knobs.I am really Happy with my Twin Power FD so my 4000 Certate is going for sale and getting replaced with the New TWIN POWER XD.Its defenitly worth a look.

Hi George, you don't need to spend that kind of money on a spinning reel, I have 4 Stradic Reels , 3 are the older FGX and one new one I bought last year but never used.
I have them in 1)3000, 2)4000 1)5000, I ordered the handle from the 5000, it has a nice power knob on it for the other reels, they are all interchangeable, they get 24 lbs of drag, I have never had a problem with them, looking forward to using this one this year. Just something to think about.
