Shimano Tranx 200

FW, I'm in search of a small low profile reel that can tangle with big tog. It's been my mission for several years now. I've been using the Daiwa Lexa 300PWR and I love them - but I'd love to get one slightly lighter as my rods are getting lighter every build. I have a Tranx 300 and that reel is a monster. Very powerful. Maybe too powerful for my requirements and definitely heavier than I'd like. This is why I thought the Tranx 200 would be it's natural replacement. But as Lep pointed out, the Tranx 200 reels were not designed for that type of duty and now I'm back to searching

On the Quantum Accurist PT100 front, I used them for the first time last season and I really like them. They served my purposes well and I now have (3). My plan was to get the newest version (the S3) in blue or green but I'm finding out they are only available in higher gear ratios  None of the reel manufacturers show us East Coast guys any love I guess!

To be REALLY honest, the best, most reliable, bulletproof, indestructible, flawless working reels I own are the older Abu Garcia reels that my good buddy Lep has "LEPIFIED" for me over the years! I have (6) now and they just keep doing the job, year after year. Took so many 10+ tog on those reels, I lost count. They never falter....Just being honest. Not saying it because he's my friend.

I'll post some pics of them later.

I understand completely, it's hard to find one reel that can do it all, that's why we have different reels for different species.
If that reel does come along, the manufacturer will never be able to produce enough of them lol.
Good luck with your quest, I will test the 200 tranx this coming tog season, but that's a long way off.

FW, actually, what I'm trying to do is find a reel SPECIFICALLY FOR TOG! Not planning to fish it for anything else. I'm not one of those guys who uses his tog gear for fluke fishing. Mainly because my Lexa 300PWR's and my "Lepped-Up" Abu's are waaay to much reel for fluke fishing. Every rod & reel combo I own has a particular purpose.

However, I have designed some of my rods with the purpose of doing dual duty. My lightest tog rods are well suited for deep water fluke applications with 3-5 ounce jigs and for live bait fluke fishing with up to 5 or 6 ounces of lead. Building rods for what I like to do has been the easy part. Finding reels to match has been increasingly difficult where the tog fishing is concerned. Too many reels today are made with fast gear ratios and typically not designed with East Coast bottom fishing in mind....Very sad.

FW, Sweet set up where did you get the power handle from?
Savvy, very nice, I see people use spinners to lever drag reels for tog, I'm not quite that picky when it comes to tog, I use maxel and penn fathom reels, I fish R.I. in deep water for tog, 2 yrs ago I caught a 12 lber at Middle Ground light, I was using my Penn fathom 12 star drag, really like how they feel and they have up to 25 lbs of drag, to be sure I have a few Abu's sitting around, my older son uses them now.
And you are right about gear ratios, I'd sacrifice speed for power, I like 4 and 5 to 1 ratios myself, hey I guess we're not west coast worthy.;)

Flukinit, the handle came from tackle world, I'm sure that there will be others that will make handles as the reels become more available.

Well I couldn't wait till next month, so I bought myself a birthday present yesterday and just got it this afternoon , put the power handle on it, not sure what rod I'm going to match it up with, I may get back into making my own, I built all my tuna tuna rods and learned from the best.
So, now with the wifes birthday coming up in april, gonna have to match what I spent, lol, not gonna tell her what I really spent.:ROFLMAO:

So, here it is, the 200 tranx with power handle, love how this reel feels, I coupled it to a Nexus spiral wrapped rod.
Nice addition to my arsenal of fluke slayer combos.
Only 5 months to go.:)
Hoping this coming season will be better than last year.View attachment 764
FW, what nexus did you get for it and how did you like the set up this past summer? I was in JW last week those nexus were nice liked the 7mh and h. Seemed the h would be a better ocean rod.
