This snowblower, the Toro Power Max 826 OHAE Snowthrower, Model 37802, has been recalled due to an amputation hazard.

(CNN) As winter storms sweep the US, you may be using your snow blower more than ever.

And if it's made by Toro, it's time to check your model number.

The company is recalling around 6,700 Toro Power Max 826 OHAE Snowthrowers with the model number 37802 because of an amputation hazard, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The snow blowers were sold nationwide and online by Home Depot, Ace Hardware and Toro authorized dealers between November 2020 and January 2021 for around $1,200.

What's the problem?

It has to do with the auger -- that is, the rotating corkscrew-like device that scoops the snow up and heaves it through the discharge chute.

Toro's recalled snow blowers have augers that may fail to disengage when the control lever is released -- meaning the auger might not stop spinning when it's supposed to.

This poses a higher risk for injury and amputation, the company says.

"The firm has received five reports of incidents related to auger failing to disengage when the control lever is release," Toro wrote. "No injuries have been reported."

What if I have a Toro snow blower?

Turn it around and check the back for the model and serial numbers.

You want to look for the model number 37802. Affected serial numbers can be found on the Toro website.

On its website, Toro says you should immediately stop using the device and contact an authorized dealer for a free repair. Find one by calling toll free at (833) 254-8856 or by using the online locator tool.

Years ago before buying my blower I looked at that Toro figuring its a good brand name, why not
1 look at that toy of a joystick and all the other plastic was all I needed to never look at it again.
VERY happy with the Ariens Deluxe I got before they redesigned them a few years ago.
Mine is all metal and has a Briggs snow blizzard motor

Changed the oil in the REO after the snow earlier in the week. Changing the oil in the Ariens tomorrow. Actually started changing it last night by draining it. Probably could have finished it, but I was kind of fed up after pulling the neighbor's Pennysaver out of it. No good deed goes unpunished.

It's a tough little machine. But much like a dog it's not a fan of a rolled up newspaper.

That was my first thought too, WTF would go to free a clogged auger when the motor's running?? Isn't that one of the basic Darwin Award Criteria???

By the way, it's the 2021 model so it it's not spanking new, you're all set. Knowing you, yours is so old "Briggs, Stratton or Toro" have autographed yours...

Unless you jury rig it you can't have the auger turning when you leave the hand holds. So you would have to have someone holding that "dead mans" control paddle. And both of you would have to be very smart to have it in gear And wide open. "Criteria" indeed. Dumb A$$ comes to mind. o_O

HA, and i though you knew me. Mine is 2 years old. Got it for $300. because it was to big for the guy. Only the third one i have owned since 1974. So right up to two years ago you would have been right, :giggle:

So.... by popular demand we can start talking about them now that its November!
Mine was started up and ready to go
Got a half dozen or so shear pins on hand. With supply shortages on just about every thing maybe I'll grab a couple more next time I'm in HD if I see 'em... 8-)

Funnel controller just snapped on mine. You know the piece that you move back and forth to move where the funnel shoots the snow.
