Some thoughts on the Jersey Fishing Expo

Kind of a Big Deal - In My Mind Anyway
Staff member
Dates: March 15-17.

The WM show is nice and I go every year, because it's the best local show we LI'ers have. But if you want to see the latest from many of the manufacturers themselves, then Jersey is also one to attend.

Not to mention there has always been some darn good deals there - so, if you do make the trip look around. Be sure to check out Daiwa (of course!), no "deals" but its good to see their latest tackle in the first person, Jigging World, OTI, Majorcraft, Connley, Olde Salt (for terminal tackle), Palmarius, and of course Black Hole - though my understanding is that Kil Song is no longer representing them.

I've heard he's now hooked up to rep an even larger high-end Korean tackle manufacturer, but I forget the name. Maybe we'll see him at WM or Jersey, I don't really know for sure. I do know that if Kil is involved, it'll be well worth your time to see the tackle and hear what he has to say. He will never steer you wrong - he's on my very short list of guys that are the best of the best in this sport.

I do not see M3 Tackle on the Exhibitor's list (as yet - though he may have a booth under his charter boat's name, I dunno). I hope they're there in March. Last season I bought a bunch of his silicone skirts in "glow," which produced well for me, fished ahead of the 5 & 6" GULP! woims on my B/S rigs. Pretty good price, but you need lots of patience if you engage that charter captain dude that owns M3 in a conversation. He will chew your ear off talking deep fluke jigging. Good info to be had there though. . . so worth the time invested. Like I said, I hope he's there this March.

I also like to stop by the Garmin and Humminbird booths - some of the latest tech makes my head hurt its so nice - at some pretty eye-popping prices, truth be known. Still, well worth a few minutes of any bottom fisherman's time, pushing buttons and speaking with the techs - and wishing for a lottery win as well.

As an aside, I like the Olde Salt 4/0 Octopus hooks for tog - never had one fail. My buddy swears by their 4/0 baitholders for tog and their 5/0 version for fluke. I stick with the now-discontinued 5/0 Mustad 3400BN for my "flukin' GULP! needs." I just recently scored 90 pieces from a local shop - cleaning them out. Now I'm set for a few seasons of prowling my local hard bottom. But the baitholders from Olde Salt and also Jigging World's house baitholder hooks are also surprisingly good - and cost a bunch less than Gamis, which I do not care for; and A LOT less than Owners, which I love, but hate the price. I know, I guess I'm a bit of a cheapskate.

Anyway, here's the Exhibitor directory, as of this morning:

Someone told me that there's a top ethnic Jewish Deli in the immediate vicinity - which wouldn't be a bad place to grab a bite afterward. I need to check into this, for sure. Though for me and da' boyz, it's always been a stop at Gino's in Howard Beach on the way home.

Truth is, I've eaten in plenty of very expensive Italian restaurants, and not a one had anything on Gino's. If you ever get there, start with the cold seafood salad, then the Shrimp Oreganata, with a "half order" side of white clam sauce. Top off with a freshly-filled cannoli and a double espresso - and you can thank me later.

Yep, as I thought, here's Harold's NY Deli. Pretty much right next door. Website:

Headed to Jersey this morning with Capt. Mike, Eddie/Savvy18, Frankie/Theresa V and Darryll in my trusty Traverse, getting there in fairly short order. The show was very heavily attended, but the nice wide isles made maneuvering not such a big problem.

"Job One" was securing a Palmarius Slow Pitch #5 for Kevin/Longcast, so to round out his collection and give him a stick that could hang in there with a 8oz sinker on the B/S Rig, should conditions on the fluke grounds require it. At the show price of $200, it was really a best buy. Dan the owner loaded me up with swag, including a nifty hat, shirt, reel covers and a few other things that I shared with the boyz. Sometimes it pays to hang with the Lep!

Darryll also bought a Slow Pitch #2 spinning stick, which I have to say was also a really, really nice piece.

Hey Kevin - I've got your rod right here!

I'm keeping the shirt though!

The hat? Meh, we can "negotiate" that!

Dan had some very impressive new rods to show off, called the "Wakizashi" series. That word in Japanese is the short sword that a Samurai would carry, in addition to his long sword - called a "Katana." These rods are quite unique, in that the blank is solid carbon, not tubular, like 99% of all the other rods out there. Light as as feather, gorgeous actions, just really serious pieces. The price at the show was $349 each, which I suppose is not all that terrible, given the tech in them (did I mention the Fuji Titanium-framed guides and the absolutely thinnest diameter blanks that I have ever seen?). That's right around what a decent custom rod would cost, and believe me, this Wakizashi lineup is every bit the equal of just about any similar-cost custom out there.

They're so new that I don't see them on his website, but here's a couple of videos for your viewing pleasure:

Next we visited with Kil Song and his lovely daughter Kumee, who were showing the first examples of his new Korean rod association - JS Rods. Really nice pieces, most priced right in the $200-249 sweet spot. Very light weight, with the preferred moderate and mod/fast actions. The "L" spinner he showed me would be perfect for offshore fluke and inshore tog. My buddy Eddie was so impressed with one of the other raw blank's uber light weight and beautiful action that he bought it - a 150 gram slow pitch blank for his favorite builder to put together for him.

Here's an interesting little tidbit - as we were speaking with Kil and Kumee, one of the Korean exhibitors from the Black Hole booth came over and bought a JS rod from Kil. I briefly spoke with him and he told me that JS is the #1 rod company in Korea, and that he personally greatly prefers fishing a JS rod to his own in-house Black Holes! Now THAT was illuminating indeed!

We stopped at the Penn factory booth for a first look at their new "Authority" spinning reel - which at roughly $500 is their top of the line series. One turn of the handle told us all we needed to know about the quality of its construction. I think my Penn Clash II is pretty darn smooth - but this Authority is definitely next level smooth. What a nice reel!

We visited with Visser - who proudly showed us their prototype #2 spinning reel, scheduled to go into production later this Summer. If you are considering a Van Staal VR50 or VR75, I urge you to wait a bit longer and give this reel a look before purchasing anything, once it arrives at your local tackle shop. I'm not a fan of the drivetrain in a Van Staal, just a bit too "geary" for my taste. But this little Visser - no such issue - very smooth, with not as much "sealing resistance" as the small Van Staals display. Not to mention the gorgeous royal blue and gunsmoke anodizing that they will offer on this new reel. Just beautiful.

We also stopped by Benny/All American Tackle's booth - which was doing a brisk business. The rest of the show was just as sweet as always. Endless vendors of lures, rigs, rods, reels - just a ridiculous amount of tackle under one roof.

And of course the traffic coming back over the "Big Bridge" was equally ridiculous. Is there ever a time that the one-lane exit to the Belt Pkwy is NOT severely backed up? I doubt it. We did eventually get back to Howard Beach for our annual early dinner extravaganza at Gino's on Cross Bay Blvd.

Eddie knows the owner well, and so he took care of our food order toot-sweet. Broiled Octopus, Italian seafood salad and a big dish of his Broccoli Rabe as apps, followed by all sorts of really special entrees. My usual Shrimp Oreganata with a side of white clam sauce was as good as any Michelin-starred restaurant could prepare it. All the other entrees looked great as well, and all of us finished with coffee or double espressos, with a shared Pistachio Tartufo dessert. I'll tell you something - it doesn't get any better when it comes to truly excellent Italian food than Gino's.

All in all, a great day, spent with some of my closest fishing buddies. Again, it just doesn't get any better.

Great writeup Lep. The crowds on Friday were larger than expected. My buddy selling Gulp had to restock to make it thru Sunday. The various manufacturers there were very generous with swag this year... if you showed them your purchase from a show vendor, they provided u some gifts. Only drawback was parking in the next zip code!
My highlight was one of my favorite NJ captains gifting me a boat tee-shirt 'when u wear it it's like having a billboard'...

Just to put a finer point on the construction of these latest "solid core" Asian jigging blanks like the Palmarius Wakizashi rods I mentioned above, watch this short vid:
