Spiral wrapped rods

Was thinking of adding a spiral wrap rod this offseasons as I do not have one. Dont want to invest is a custom for one as I have never used one. Application will be for Ocean fluking Cholera, Shinny and Montauk figure up to 4/5 oz. Have looked at the Jigging world Nexus 7 in both MH and H. Leaning towards the H if I went with that blank. Also gonna look at the Charter Special in 6'8" at the upcoming shows.
Anyone using one of these or another spiral wrap let us know what you think of them. Thanks

Every spiral-wrapped rod mentioned here is VERY nice. After multiple trips to Jigging World and reviewing all of Kilsong’s Black Holes offerings, I went with his 6’8” Charter Special Slow Pitch stick.

Frankly, you couldn’t pull it from my cold, wet hands last season. My lighter outfits got their turns when the drift was slower. But once a 3oz. or more jig was called for, the Black Hole answered the call, catching MANY fish in the 3 to 7lb+ range.

Just a beautiful, moderate action, that really cushions the head shakes of a larger fluke. Excellent for jigs in the 2 to 6+oz. range, and certainly capable of handling sinkers in the 8+ range, if dragging bait is your thing.

Kilsong stocks it in both spiral wrap as well as the "guides up top" versions. I highly recommend you check out this rod - a worthy addition to your arsenal, if you need a quality deep jigging stick.

FYI - - If you are going to use a lefty reel make sure the transition guides are on the right. If you are going to use a levelwind, then it doesnt matter.
With a spiral wrap the line is going to pile up on the side of the spool where the transition guides are. If you have to level the line on the spool it is much easier to push the line with your thumb than to pull it across. By having the guides transition opposite the handle you will never have to pull the line across the spool.

@Leprechaun if you had to pick a factory rod for those days you gotta use the 5-6oz bucktails what would you consider as the best all around rod? I've read some of your posts in the past and know you were high on the trevala s series and now i see you like the blackhole charter special and just want to know your thoughts. I already on the 7'3 MH charter special and use it for deepwater wreck fishing and love it so I'm interested in that slow pitch model.

Of the rods I've owned/used, Black Hole 6'8" Charter Special, all day long.

Twice on Sunday.

And I've got some big dollar custom sticks, that now stay home, on their storage hooks.

BH CS > Shimano Trevala S MH - and I own both. . .

wrap them never liked them...The reason so many company's are now acid wrapping rods it hides the flaws..I wont say who I spoke with that I got to agree with me BUT!!!

I feel it works better on a harder mod/fast or fast blank better than a moderate or parabolic blank...If it works for you enjoy .

I just acid wrapped a BH Challenger Bank 731M, but I have not had the opportunity to use it yet so I cannot say if I did a good job. It certainly looks and feels like it is going to be excellent. I actually transitioned to the same side as my handle (left) as I sometimes lay the rod down when I go on my buddys smaller boat and this allows me to be able to lay in on its right side without risk of bashing guides. I have seen that some say this is "wrong" for torque and line lay reasons, but that is why they call it custom.

one way to check it is to put reel & line on ..load the rod if the line is touching the guide rings all the time..from a lite load to fully loaded it correct..if not , not...this should be done before wrapping the rod..

as far as how many guides you use in the spiral is less important than the line making contact with the guide rings through the load

also a good way to check if a factory acid wrapped is correct..

same way the line should make contact with every guide throughout the load on a standard or spinning rod...if its not its not wrapped correct...thats why you should bring the reel your using to the store or if its custom & the builder doesn't have the reel or one like it you should leave it with him..If he doesnt ask find another builder ..

all a fishing rod is , is a tool to catch fish...But as a furniture makes for 25years I can tell you not all tools are equal...dont get caught up in the "ART WORK " as a gauge to determine the quality of how a rod will perform..The mechanical end is what counts..from the blank design materials used how they are used the roll the bake & the build all come first..

It makes me crazy when I see a big money reel on a cheap rod...spend the money on the rod .Buy a cheap reel..

one last point on guides & placement..think of the guides as belt loops on your pants..if the belt doesnt make contact what good are they..if there are two few or to many what good are they ..to large to small same problem...Goldie locks its needs to be just right..
