Spring is coming

I almost have the itch to actually try for them one day.If I get a warm enough day before I start chasing bass around I will pick some bank mussels and grab some worms and set up on some old spots.
I had that same itch a little over 10 years ago. So, I followed your plan, Vinnie. Bought a ton of chum, bank mussels, the best sandworms, fresh skimmer and devoted an entire day to trying to find just a Flounder or 2 for dinner. I made a super hard attempt at many of my best drops all the way from Robbins Island to so many super productive spots around Shelter Island that used to give up even a couple of fish on the toughest day. My results for all that effort was literally one scallop that got snagged on my flounder rig! I had to admit defeat after that much effort.

If its not too cold for these old bones on a yak with sandals and shorts and a wifebeater under a PFD I may try towing a lure of some sort up my backbay boat channels to start another longer drift for fluke come May 4. Undecided between swim shads, Gulp! tube and worm or a plug. (I usually just waste an hour or two in April practice surfcasting.) Thoughts ?

I troll a 9ers lure rig I use tsunami Shad’s they are deadly in the spring and late fall I buy arm rig from 9ers lures and attach the Shad’s to it. I have used single tsunami Shad’s on a spinner, for this I prefer the 5” or 6” shad I only use the ones with stripes on them

medium size trolling rod I buy that arm from 9ers lures attached my own shads that I buy tsunami tiger stripe 3oz drail depending on depth is how much I let out running at about 1 rpm I find any faster you attract blues or the rig isn’t low enough.

i actually use one wire and one mono set two rigs out sometimes it doesn’t matter if there chewing and other days one works better then the other

ridiculous to even mention that! back when the blackfish season was always open there was never a dearth of tog. granted there are less fish now BUT closing our measly one month spring season so that the pin-hookers can have all the fish is ridiculous. im sorry I felt the need to post this but ideas like that just lead to more NY state closures

I agree. Commercial season is April 16-Jan25th. I have no problem "harvesting" my share of spring tog as allowed by law.

I’m all for whoever chooses to fish for them my problem is by time the boats are in and ready to go bass fishing is in full swing. And if I was to catch a big male blackfish he would make the dinner table

We all know how slow that Tog grow as well as the intense pressure on this fishery these days. It is nearly impossible to satisfy both the recreational and commercial fisherman with the level of today's stocks on so many species. The correct course would always be to defer to regulations across the board that actually protect those species in decline. However, it never seems to work out that way with our current regulatory system, which far too often does pit one group against another.

On a more pleasant note, today marked the start of the journey toward another season on the water. With light winds and the rain holding off all day, I was able to remove the shrink wrap and start to do some clean up before the heavy work really starts with some better weather the end of this week.

Step 1 of a very long list is finally complete!! :)
