Started out nice, nightmare at the end today

Went out today, Thursday 8/15, to troll for bonito, Spanish Mackerel, Bluefish, trolled for maybe 2 hours out to the freighters and tankers, nothing, Flat as a lake going out thru Jones Inlet , trolling outside. It's usually not good trolling on flat calm days but I only go out flat calm with my Panga 25 and I have to make the best out of it. So I stopped and fished for Fluke at the freighters and tankers, 3 or 4 shorts., I was all by myself , there was a big fleet of party boats/private boats on the reef to the east of me. Figured they were drifting structure and didn't wanna do that. I started my 50 HP Evinrude Etec outboard and turned the tiller throttle ( I steer in the back with the tiller) to speed away. Nothing , no matter how far I advanced the throttle I wasn't accelerating and could only cruise along at 2.5 knots. So I went all the way from the Freighters and Tankers to Wantagh Park going 2.5 knots. Slow , but I made it back in about 2 1/2 hours. Luckily it was incoming tide and I was doing about 4 knots with the tide. Felt like a sailboat. Gotta check the throttle cable and next winter I might put a 10 hp kicker on the back because I hate going on the ocean with 1 motor. Thankfully it was incoming tide and the inlet was flat as a lake .

I fished out there yesterday, and we started out close to the first fleet of boats. But then we went out to second fleet way out and I said to my buddy you know all these boats have more then one engine. It was easily 6 to 8 miles out we kinda laughed it off but you don’t realize how fast things can go from good to bad. Good thing for calm seas and your home safe

Both times it happened to my friends 30hp tiller etec it was a cooling issue. Once it was the water pump and the other time the thermostat. The engine goes into "limp mode" and does not let you throttle up in order to prevent overheating. Best of luck with the issue.
All Hands, I think you're right about the cause, I checked the throttle cable by shifting the throttle handle and it's still connected . Must be a cooling issue, I hope it has nothing to do with the lower unit that was recently repaired. Had the shaft extended to 25 inch's. It leaked oil and let in saltwater , brought it back to the mechanic and they said a gasket was folded and that's where the water came in.They fixed it and sent me on my way. I didn't see much oil coming out, just a small amount in the water that I thought was leftover oil that was on the outside of the motor. My 3 year Etec service replaced the water pump and installed a new thermostat. Hope it's nothing serious. I used it 4 times since the repair. The whole way back I reached behind the motor to feel how cool the cooling water was coming out and it felt pretty cool, so it didn't seem it was overheating much.
