Suffolk County wants to buy another 10,000 acres of Farmland

Suffolk wants to buy another 10,000 acres of farmland. They did a study around 1970 and they figured around 30,000 acres should be preserved. That with the 100,000 acre Core Preservation area is a nice chunk of land. Too bad they didn't save a few farms around Farmingdale/Melville in the late 1990's . I wish they would buy up all the vacant lots around the county and preserve here and there. You see lots on Sunrise Hwy past Connequot State Park, why can't they buy those small lots ? Won't look nice if they have one Strip Mall after another. Preserve out there as much as possible. You think with all the wealth out East that some Billionaire would step forward and buy all the remaining land on Long Island and donate it to the County/State. Somebody like Bloomberg who has 60 Billion.
It's still very nice out East, especially the North Fork. Drive along Route 25 near Calverton and you think you're upstate.
They did a good job developing/ preserving farmland down on the Jersey shore by Freehold. A nice mix. I wish it was like that in Nassau on the South Shore.
Long Island has about 7-8 percent of the states deer population. Amazing when you think about it. Someday it'll have the best turkey hunting in the state. Look what stocking a few birds in the late 1990's has produced so far. I see Turkey here and there now. I saw a bird along Sunrise Hwy.. It's really the perfect habitat for Turkey with no predators/ mild winters and warmer springs. Took a drive to Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay and saw Deer Crossing signs and Wild Turkey.

Agree with your turkey assessment. I see Turkeys EVERY day here in Mattituck, there’s at least 5 or six couples with their young (sorry, don’t know the technical term for baby turkeys) within a couple of blocks of my home.

Here on the North Fork, the Peconic Land Trust has done an amazing job buying and preserving the forestry. We are blessed to have about 6 acres west of my home preserved. The amount of wildlife is amazing.

Really a species without natural predation is a recipe for long term disaster
No balance equals no good

I really don’t know there may be natural predation in that area and if there is and there is a steady food source like a turkey population their numbers will increase accordingly
As they say , be carefull what you wish for you just might get it
Things that prey on turkeys have no problem with dogs and cats either

I wasn’t saying their were none
I don’t know what wildlife lives in the area

I was simply quoting the op

point is stocking a few birds in the 1990s could have drastic implication in the 2000s and beyond both because their is predation or with exploiting turkey populations is there is not

it’s not nice to fool with Mother Nature

Cold wet springs are the main killer of young turkeys. A bunch of times I was upstate and it snowed in early May. Turkey Fly up into trees at night and avoid the predators.

I don't think you have to worry about strip malls going in. For now, they are a thing of the past in regard to corporate interest and money makers. Take a ride through Old Country Road, Hempstead Turnpike, Rt.347, 25A, Jericho....all the famous strip mall, mini mall venues. 70% of the stores are closed. Covid putting the final kibosh on those that were still able to survive a changing retail market. What you might get are assisted living facilities, town houses, medical offices, hospital one stop shop off site buildings and the like. (Insert "The Greens" on Melvilles last farms here).

Problem is,Suffolk County doesn’t have two nickels to rub together..
A special Sales Tax is funding the purchase of farmland. Make the tax 1 percent and really get aggressive buying land out there. They pay 5 percent to the realty, what's 1 percent ?

Ok so you get 1 percent for your special project
The next guy gets 1 for his
Soon your all paying a ton more than your already paying
And then you need to maintain all these pet projects

sounds like more tax n spend

But they keep making ppl
And ppl need places to live and grow

that’s the rub of it as man expands animals and even nature contract it is the natural order of things

now if you want to limit the growth and expansion of the human species
We would all love to hear your views on forced abortion and sterilization or what ever you propose to accomplish such a thing
How bout allowing ppl to starve in countries without food
