Surf City Steve here, and the beach is calling! The fall run is in full effect, and if you're a surfcaster, this is your time to shine. The action has been epic, with bass of all sizes tearing up the surf line. From Robert Moses to Southampton, the bite is on.

The Skinny from the Sand

The name of the game right now is sand eels. The bass are keyed in on them, and you need to match the hatch. Small tins, slender bucktails, and teasers are all getting crushed. The bite has been best at first light, with a steady pick of slot-sized fish. But don't be afraid to throw bigger plugs, especially after dark. There are some real cows cruising the beaches, and they're looking for a bigger meal.

We've also seen some incredible bunker blitzes. When the adult bunker are in the surf, the fishing is insane. Big metal-lip swimmers, darters, and bottle plugs are the way to go. It's a game of patience, waiting for the bait to show up, but when it does, it's game on. We're talking about fish in the 20- and 30-pound class, and they will test your gear and your will.

Steve's Strategy

The key to success in the surf is to be mobile. Don't just plant yourself in one spot. Cover ground, look for cuts and structure, and pay attention to the birds. The fish are on the move, and you need to be too. The outgoing tide has been the most productive, but don't discount the incoming, especially at night.

This is what we live for, my friends. The thrill of the bite, the sound of a screaming drag, and the satisfaction of landing a big bass from the sand. So wax up your board, grab your gear, and get out there. The fish are waiting.
