The Bike path along Jones Beach is real ugly!

The one last place on the South Shore to enjoy nature and the Tour De France crowd ruined a nice scenic roadway with their ridiculous bike path. The ugly fence along the entire path is a real eyesore and takes away from the beauty of the area. How many people ride a bike from Jones Inlet all the way out to Captree ????? That bike path is for the hard core bike riders, not for kids or the average bike rider. They should've built a bike route down the Meadowbrook Pkwy. so normal bike riders can go to the beach in the summer.
I see some construction on Sunrise Hwy. /Route 27 out past Middle Island, don't tell me it's a bike path out East . Looks like they're adding another lane on the shoulder.I saw bike lanes on the road leading to Montauk like it was Midtown Manhatten , the Environmental wackos are the ones who ruin beautiful places.

I don't think the Wantagh Parkway bike path itself is bad, it's been there for decades and I see all kinds of traffic on it. Serious cyclists, family riders, rollerskaters, joggers, walkers, whatever. The guard rail is an entire, camel-is-a-horse-designed-by-a-committee clusterf@¢k that was installed after a motorcycle accident killed a bicyclist.

The first move they made in response was to close the right lane on the northbound side. Because, you know, that 10 feet of pavement is sufficient isolate the bike path.

When that futility was pointed out there were some "engineering" objections to a guard rail. Apparently a guard rail is a bad idea because it can cause a motorcycle rider to be forcibly dismounted. Let's just ignore the fact that since 1930-something there has been a guardrail separating the north and southbound lanes. So apparently it's okay to pitch them into oncoming traffic, but tossing them on to grass is unacceptable.

The reality is the state didn't want to spend the money on a traffic barrier. Although you could make the argument that the pressure to add a traffic barrier was just a kneejerk because of a single tragic incident. So now you have the hideous wire barrier and one less lane available going north. Good thing they spent the money to pave it in the first place.

Sunrise Highway/27 does NOT run anywhere near Middle Island??
Were you referring to the haml;et of Middle Island or just generically the "middle of the island"??
There is a project running on the Eastbound side form Speonk Riverhead Rd eastward but it's my understanding they are doing an underground utility install. The "lane" is a temporary construction lane from what I've been told.
