Trust me, your pets are either too smart or too stupid to stare at the sun.
The commentator suggested that the animal will see you staring up for several minutes watching & out of curiosity may follow suit to determine what it is you're staring at.
 
A final word, on an absolutely amazing experience. If you think that "Well I saw 97% covered, so I saw it." you couldn't be more wrong.

I've witnessed 6 other solar eclipses up to 97%, in my life and they didn't eve come close to the AMAZING EXPERIENCE that a total eclipse presents. I can't recommend it enough that if you're ever presented with the once in a lifetime experience of a total solar eclipse, DO IT!!

The absolute icing on my Eclipse Experience today was the fact that the normally cloudy April skies of Northern Maine by Moosehead Lake, were totally clear of clouds, an absolutely crystal clear blue sky!!!

Well, another Bucket List Item crossed off, just amazing.
