Boy, 7, and Woman Dead After Boat Capsizes in Hudson River

Ten passengers were injured when the private boat overturned near a pier in Midtown Manhattan, officials said.

Two people, including a 7-year-old boy, died on Tuesday after a 27-foot boat capsized in the Hudson River just north of Pier 79 in Midtown Manhattan, according to police officials.

A dozen passengers were on the boat when it overturned, and one was seriously injured while nine sustained minor injuries, a police official said in an email. It was unclear what had caused the boat to capsize.

Along with the 7-year-old, a 48-year-old woman died, according to Detective Arthur Tsui of the Police Department.

Mayor Eric Adams was on the scene as a rescue operation was underway and buses, ambulances and fire trucks clogged nearby streets.

Assistant Chief James McCarthy of Patrol Borough Manhattan South said in a press briefing that the capsized boat “was charted by a family and friends and it was owned by an individual who was actually on a Jet Ski following the boat.”

Inspector Anthony Russo of the Harbor Unit said that a mix of factors, including “a lot of commercial, recreational traffic,” may have contributed to the boat’s capsizing.

“We had the current, the wind, wakes approaching from different directions, waves from different directions,” he said. “It takes some skill to operate the Hudson River, so it could’ve been a contributing factor.”

Mayor Adams warned of accidents on water in summertime.

“It’s a clear reminder to us as we move through the summer months, water is an enjoyable part of New York but it can be a dangerous place,” he said.

Jeff Ryan, 38, an equities trader who had been on a cruise tour, said he saw a swarm of boats and helicopters buzzing above the side of the accident.

“You couldn’t see the boat, it was already under,” he said.

He said his tour boat operator had not mentioned news of the boat capsizing and failed to stop operations and help with the rescue.

“They continued us on our tour, they didn’t say guys there’s a person missing, keep an eye out,” he said. “The tour guide said we’re going around this mess but there were 200 people in the boat who could’ve seen if someone was struggling in the water.”

Ted Fields, 49, chief operating officer of Big City Tourism, who has worked in the Hudson River ferry tourism industry for over seven years, said that deaths in the Hudson River weren’t rare, recalling a fatal Jet Ski accident near Battery Park in May.

“Listen, choppy waters,” he said. “The Hudson is very rough waters and very deep.

“Between the Jet Skis and the kayaks, the sail boats, a lot of smaller vessels, they’re mixing in with these larger vessels. It’s dangerous if you’re not respecting the waters.”

Siren inadvertently activated at New Hampshire nuclear plant

Associated Press July 12, 2022

CONCORD, N.H. — New Hampshire homeland security officials said Tuesday that a siren was inadvertently activated at the Seabrook Nuclear Power Station, and that there is no emergency and no danger to the public.

The state Homeland Security and Emergency Management agency and plant owner NextEra Energy Resources put out statements more than 30 minutes after beachgoers in nearby Hampton and Rye said they heard announcements at about 11 a.m. about the beaches being closed because of a problem at the plant.

“We are aware of the sirens calling for an evacuation near Seabrook Station,” said Bill Orlove, a spokesperson for plant. “The sirens’ activation was sent in error during testing of the system.

“Local authorities have told the public there is no need to evacuate,” he said. “Seabrook Station is currently operating with no issues that impact the nearby community. We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused.”

Police and fire departments in the area said the beaches were not closed.

“The Seabrook Station Alert was inadvertent there is NO EMERGENCY,” the Hampton Fire Department posted on Facebook.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City residents are accustomed to warnings about all kinds of potential threats — severe weather, public health, mass shootings.

But a new PSA on surviving a nuclear attack has rattled some cages.

Released this week by the city’s emergency management agency, the 90-second video advises citizens to stay indoors and wash off any radioactive dust or ash. It opens on a computer-generated street, devoid of life. Damaged skyscrapers can be seen in the background.

Looking into the camera, a spokesperson says: “So there’s been a nuclear attack. Don’t ask me how or why. Just know that the big one has hit."

stay inside & wash off any radioactive dust or ash?

Stay inside what??!? Your house will be just so much radioactive dust blowing in the wind assuming you actually survived to start with. Highly unlikely.
I seriously doubt there will be anything even remotely resembling a water supply to wash anything off & if there is - the water itself will probably be radioactive.

Apparently this is the model of boat, Yamaha AR240 - 12 people would not be comfortable.

A rabbit with horns? Why some of these critters look like a real-life 'jackalope'

It’s not the Upside Down – it’s just South Dakota.

About once a year, Sioux Falls Animal Control and the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks get reports about a rabbit with growths that look like horns or tentacles. It's not the only place it happens either: The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Department says cases are reported every year. They can be found throughout Midwest states.

The rabbit is a strange sight, and gazing upon it, you might think you've encountered something out of American folklore.

Sioux Falls resident Dennis Schorr told KELO he saw an unusual rabbit July 7 while walking his dog.
"I’ve never seen nothing like that before. I walk my dogs every day, and I see lots of rabbits – but today was very unusual," Schorr said.

But officials say there’s a logical explanation. Here’s what’s going on.

Russia Says It’s Losing Because Ukraine Has Experimental Mutant Troops Created in Secret Biolabs

Nerarly five months into its senseless war against Ukraine, Russia has concocted a wild new explanation for why the Kremlin’s plans for a quick takeover fell apart so spectacularly—because Ukrainian troops were turned into superhuman killing machines during “secret experiments” in American-run biolabs, of course.

Never mind the myriad reports of Russian troops refusing to fight by the thousands, sabotaging their own shoddy equipment and even deliberately wounding themselves to abandon the war, Russian lawmakers claim the real setback for Moscow was “drugged up” Ukrainian soldiers.

That claim was made Monday by two Russian lawmakers heading up a commission to investigate “biolaboratories” in Ukraine, Kommersant reported.

Konstantin Kosachev, the deputy speaker of Russia’s Federation Council, and Irina Yarovaya, deputy chair of the State Duma, touted what they described as bombshell findings from the “investigation.”

Testing of Ukrainian POWs’ blood, they claimed, uncovered “a range of diseases” that suggest they were secretly experimented on “for military purposes.”

“And we see: the cruelty and barbarity with which the military personnel of Ukraine behave, the crimes that they commit against the civilian population, those monstrous crimes that they commit against prisoners of war, confirm that this system for the control and creation of a cruel murder machine was implemented under the management of the United States,” Yarovaya was quoted telling reporters.

“And those performance enhancing drugs that they are still given in order to completely neutralize the last traces of human consciousness and turn them into the most cruel and deadly monsters also confirm this,” she claimed.

Bizarrely, she also claimed that the presence of Hepatitis A antibodies in Ukrainian prisoners’ blood was proof of an American biolabs conspiracy, since a former health minister for Ukraine was a dual Ukrainian-American citizen who had worked to acquire drugs for the treatment of hepatitis in the country.

“It is quite possible that this was about testing these drugs on military personnel,” Yarovaya said.
