the "Headline That Caught My Attention or the WTF" thread

Interesting, but I checked out some of the local diggers' websites and they're all talking about a "severe shortage", being unable to fill most of their orders. There's no reason stated for the shortage.

I may call someone up to see if I can find out something more concrete...

Just found this on a worm diggers Facebook page, this is what a dealer is paying to the diggers, so your $15 a dozen considering shipping prices is a bargain!!

Regs: $0.70
Selects: $1.05
I’ve been hearing that excuse for a few years. The shortage I heard was Diggers. Another was something about Glassworms/eels being a much bigger payday. They squeaked $12 last year in a few places out here. When I had a chance I went to Jacks (aka Worm Mafia) in City Island and paid $8 while they were $10 in Salem Mass.

Wish someone would just make a replica scent that works. I hate being committed to them.

Shortage of diggers, probably correct. There are 3 careers in Maine that you can pursue with you ass higher than your head while raking, blueberry raking, steamer clam raking and worm raking. All three are tough ways to put a roof over one's head and food on the table, and obviously blueberry is seasonal, while the other 2 are year-long. Not sure what they charge in the few tackle stores around here, but on the rare times I want sandworms, I just go out in back and dig my own. NFW I'd even pay $10 them. Maybe someday they'll be a better scent.

The Glass Eels, Elvers, is a MUCH bigger payday, but a totally invalid excuse for worm pricing or shortages as of about 4-5 years ago when the regulators got involved. Now it is a very limited fishery with strict limits which starts around March 22 and is finished well-before April 15th. Yes, they're getting ≈ $2,000/lb, and the 7 lucky fishermen who have 100 lb quotas can make $200,000, but these are the exception and not the rule.

When you get your first license, you can only catch 4 lbs, so that sure as hell isn't taking you off the worm or clam flats. Each year it does go up, but it doesn't really get near to a living wage until you're in it for a good 10 years.

Philadelphia Woman, Mad the Eagles Lost, Allegedly Attacks Girlfriend and Puts Dog in Microwave

Police allege Gaskins, her girlfriend and the girlfriend’s dog were staying at a hotel in Hanover Township Sunday. The television was tuned to the Eagles’ playoff game against the New Orleans Saints, which the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles lost 20-14, ending their season.
According to the police statement, Gaskins allegedly began yelling at the television after her team’s defeat, setting off a physical confrontation with her girlfriend. The women allegedly pushed each other before Gaskins forced her to the floor, punching her several times in the face.

The statement alleges the girlfriend headed towards the hotel room’s door, and as she did, Gaskins allegedly threatened her dog, a white Pomeranian.

Police were called to the hotel, where they found the girlfriend, with blood and abrasions to her face and neck.

Inside the room, they removed the white Pomeranian from the microwave.

It’s a science experiment, nothing to see here.
