Have some major home issues and when I had to transfer some $$$ between the accounts to fund the projects, I told the bank teller I wish I was in Washington so I could get others to pay to rebuild my "infrastructure". She started laughing hysterically...

Catalytic converters stolen from a variety of vehicles in Portland, police say

Portland police are warning residents to remain vigilant while they investigate a series of thefts involving the removal of catalytic converters from motor vehicles.

The thieves, who most often sell the auto parts for cash, are not discriminating about which vehicles they target. Investigators said catalytic converters have been stolen from sedans as well as buses and box trucks that have typically been parked overnight in the city.

“These incidents follow regional and national trends of increasing thefts,” Portland Police Department spokesman David Singer said in a statement.

Portland police are advising vehicle owners to park in well-lit areas whenever possible and to make sure that their vehicle’s security alarms work.

This week, the Sanford Police Department and the city of Sanford issued a similar joint warning about the theft of catalytic converters, which has become an increasing trend regionally and nationally.

Thieves typically can make between $50 and $875 by stealing and selling a converter, depending on the type of precious metals in it. Many lower-emission and hybrid vehicles contain higher amounts of precious metals, and some larger vehicles have multiple catalytic converters, according to Sanford police. The cost to repair a vehicle can be several thousand dollars.

Sanford police made an arrest in connection with the theft of a catalytic converter late last month. Their investigation led to the arrest of a West Newfield man.

A catalytic converter is an EPA exhaust emission control device that reduces toxic gases and pollutants in exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine into less-toxic pollutants. Converters are typically found beneath the vehicle as part of the exhaust system.

The International Association of Auto Theft Investigators advises vehicle owners to consider implementing additional deterrents, such as engraving a VIN or license information into the converter, using automotive exhaust spray paint to mark tag information, or install “ultra destruct labels” that break and leave a mark when removed.

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity, such as people trying to gain access to the underside of a vehicle, should contact Portland police at 874-8575.

Jennifer Carvajal, a Plant City teenager who pleaded no contest to DUI manslaughter appears at the Hillsborough County Courthouse in Tampa on Thursday, December 17, 2015.

Donations are pouring in for two Idaho middle school employees who are being hailed as "heroes" after a sixth grade girl opened fire in the hallway Thursday.

Three people — an adult and two students — were injured at Rigby Middle School, Jefferson County Sheriff Steve Anderson said. The victims were shot in their limbs and are expected to survive.

The rampage only stopped when a female teacher took the handgun from the shooter and "held her until law enforcement apprehended her," Anderson said. The teacher has been identified in a community Facebook group, multiple GoFundMe campaigns and local media as Krista Gneiting, an eighth-grade math teacher.

Dean Turnblom, Gneiting's father, told Fox News that Gneiting said she felt like she had an "angel on my shoulder" as she offered reassuring words to the shooter before gently disarming the girl.

  • Russia’s Defense Minister suggested he wants to clone a group of ancient warriors.
  • That’s going to be tricky. To date, there haven’t been any human clones, and the odds are low for even non-human clones.
  • The legality of cloning is murky because of the medical uses for specific kinds of cloning.
When you hold a job like Defense Minister of Russia, you presumably have to be bold and think outside the box to protect your country from enemy advances. And with his latest strategic idea—cloning an entire army of ancient warriors—Sergei Shoigu is certainly taking a big swing.

A Florida fisherman’s efforts came to an abrupt end when he almost became the catch of the day.

Footage posted on YouTube shows 22-year-old Tommy Lee fishing for tarpon in the Everglades on Saturday when an alligator emerges from the water.

“Oh, Jesus Christ,” he says as the gator approaches.

Then, to make matters worse, Lee fell while fleeing.

Fortunately, the gator held back and, after a tense standoff, returned to the water.

But the fisherman called it day.

“And I am out of here,” he said. “Screw that.”
