I've mastered the one match fire just this year. Of course, dry wood and dry kindling is key. I spent a couple of days in the spring splitting 1-4 year old logs into large fire logs and kindling.
  • Take a medium Walmart or Amazon box, crumple up 3-4 sheets of newspaper and put them inside.

  • Lay a great amount of kindling over the box. I can pick up an armful of small, dead branches in 5 min by a quick trip down the dock path. However in case I can't find any twigs and small branches, I split a bunch of wood for kindling at 1/2 - 3/4" thick.

  • Arrange your well-seasoned, split, large logs upright on end and lean them all around the box in a pyramid shape.

  • Light the newspaper and pour the drinks.
The fire should be rocking within 10 min like today's photo; that fire was about 10 min "old". If you look closely you can see the Walmart box. I haven't used any charcoal starter all summer so no chemical smell which makes the Admiral happy.

Another great addition is getting a good, heavy-duty grate for your fire pit. Mine has the logs 4" above the bottom of the fire pit, not like the ones that often come with pits and only lift the logs maybe 3/4 of an inch. The upward airflow really fuels the fire.
