The Smart Home

I do agree that I feel some guilt when lying in my bed and tell Alexa to turn off my bedroom lights. The switch is almost at arm's length.

The market tells us if it's useless and right now the smart home is big business.

I'm not against technology or anything - but - I am against useless technology.

We definitely need the next "big thing", attaching the Internet to everything isn't exactly the ideal way to drive consumerism.
I though Virtual Reality would take off more than it has. Even smartphones have reached their saturation point, but somehow that has driven up the prices of the phones - unlike TV's that have dropped drastically.

I guess 5G connectivity is their next roll out, that is something I definitely won't need.

jpd - I haven't even gone the smart phone route - don't need it. Just want a phone that makes/receives calls - no texting either...

My phone costs me $25 a month for unlimited service & the phone was free when I signed up with AT&T 10 years ago. I mean - how much are people paying for smart phone service a month & what did y'all pay for the phones themselves?

Unless you're using them for business - it's ridiculous.

Sure I get looks when I whip out the ol' "Start Trek Communicator" - but hey - $25 a month? Let 'em look.
And it fits in my pants or shirt pocket unobtrusively.

Surprisingly, I’m still using an iPhone 6. I am considering upgrading soon though. They really aren’t just phones, they’re basically a computer in your pocket. So like a computer, you eventually need to upgrade.

George, as you probably guessed I'm a bit of a Geek also, but have resisted "Smart Houses" because of the insecurity potential. However I just dumped my iPhone 6 not because it wasn't performing, but because at 16 GB, there just wasn't enough storage for music and photos. I had my heart set on an 8 @ 256 GB so I could "have it all" for less, but when Black Friday came around, I couldn't get to Wallymart, BUT Verizon had a $400 off deal on the X so I bought that over the phone. The only reason I have an iPhone to begin was my reticence to pay $$$ for so long that when I went into a Verizon store with a flip phone 4.5 years ago they said they could give me a 6 for no charge. Then my granddaughters were on Facetime so it worked and I stuck with Apple this time around.

Anywho, there is an additional benefit with the X, and probably all the newer phones in that they are actually BETTER PHONES!! I live in a "major carrier black hole" where Verizon kinda worked with my 6, but AT&T was and still is a lost cause with any phone, so made the switch to Verizon when we moved here, and bought a home internet device that would shunt any Verizon phone through my WiFi to the internet. Turns out the X, and probably all the latest Samsungs, etc., works on 3 more carrier frequencies than the 6 so I can use my phone at home without any need for internet device which is now in storage, so that's a plus. I'm also guessing when I head out off shore this summer, I'll have reception further from the coast.

Bottom line, I'd start looking at the newer phones to replace your 6.

Smart phones don't cost anything more than dumb phones for monthly service, unless you include a data plan, which sounds like something you don't want or need. Some Smart phones are also free when you sign up for a new contract. You should look into it, you can probably get a smart phone for the same price you're paying for you dumb phone right now.

FWIW, I replaced my I6 plus with an I8 plus last june, not because I wanted to, but because I lost my I6. Both were (are) 32GB, I really don't see much of a difference between the two. The I8 may be a little faster, but I can't even be sure of that.

ok ok
