the "What are you doing NOW" thread (part deux)

That sucks, Tagamet.

oh yeah....................

I'm already taking stuff on a daily basis for it. I've also had to change my diet because of it.
No Coffee
No Caffeinated beverages of any type (Coffee, Tea, Soda, etc) - haven't had a cup of coffee in over a year & 1/2
No Italian Foods containing tomatoes (although I do allow myself to indulge once a week) - no tomatoes period
No Juices
Practically No Fruits
Not Supposed to have Alcohol (but we all know that's pretty much ignored)
No Chocolate
No Eating/Snacking for at least 3 hours before bed
No Fried Foods (again limit myself to once a week)
No Butter
No Cow's Milk
Nothing High in Fats or Sugars (Ice Cream, Whipped Cream, Mousse, pretty much all deserts)
Nothing Spicy (All Mexican, Buffalo Wings, Ceviche, etc.)
No Onions, Garlic, Green Peppers (I ignore the garlic directive of course & have the occasional Red Onion when eating Cream Cheese & Lox on a Bagel)
Oh Yeah - No Cream Cheese.
No Cheese (that one doesn't get much acknowledgement either)
No Carbonated Beverages (again sodas but also things like seltzer)

Pretty much nothing but water & dirt it seems & there's probably an issue with eating dirt...........

and if you find yourself downing antacid tablets several times a week - you probably should be changing your diet as well - chronic acid reflux can cause esophageal & tongue cancer

I would keep eating whatever I like. If it got really bad I would quit life. Not that I’m saying you should do as I would .

I had to spend time in the ENT chair - under sedation while the doctor scraped damaged tissue off of the roof of my mouth & my tongue caused by the reflux. It was sent out for biopsying & they did find a precancerous lesion in the mess that came off my tongue.

Type I had was a silent type - in that it was not giving me heartburn but doing the damage unnoticed by me. Find out because I felt like I had something stuck in the back of my throat. Went to my GP he thought it looked like a polyp & sent me to the ENT who made the diagnosis.

CALM DOWN....

Don’t listen or believe hardly anything you read or hear.

Take one Tagamet and one 12 hr Claradin D each day for a week with 60ounces of water for a day.
———————
Take the ONE 12hr Claradin D ( not any other sup. Must be this exactly) - after breakfast , coffee and your first 20 oz water for the day.

Then, before lunch and a solid workout routine ( consisting of at least any 20 min excessive routine) - take the ONE Tagamet and another 20 OZ of filtered water.

Then after a shower and before Dinner another 20 oz of water.

THE 20 OZ OF WATER X’S 3 AND ONE OF EACH PILL A DAY.

Let me know how you feel after a week.
I had this problem and cured it.

GL

Prescription Proton Pump Inhibitors, but many are OTC now, at lesser doses. For example, prescription Prevacid is 30 mg, but OTC version is 15 mg, so take 2. Same goes for Nexium, prescription is 40 mg, OTC is 20 mg.

That being said if dietary changes help, that's best. However, if you don't have symptoms, you won't know if it's working. Before I went to PPIs, I had heartburn and, believe it or not, the one food guaranteed to start "the burn", was OATMEAL!!! GI doc was astonished, especially since Mexican never gave me heartburn!

So you think your Ultra Unique and odd condition is what he should focus on for results or are we just talking about “ you ”.

Try what I said.

The one problem with any idea with Larry is that he's asymptomatic, e.g. no pain, so he may try something and THINK it's working, while it isn't. So he may continue having gastric reflux, with the associated esophageal and/or lingual damage, and be oblivious to it.

Protein Pump Inhibitors reduce the amount of protons (Acid) your stomach lining cells produce, the most common form of gastric reflux.

Your idea is another tack, as Claritin reduces histamine production and Tagament binds to histamine receptors, preventing histamines from binding there and causing their effects. Since there is a histamine-mediated pathway for gastric acid production, this combination also reduces gastric acid production. Therefore we're basically saying the same thing, reduce stomach acid, the cause of the cellular damage he's seeing.

Regardless, he should be under the care of a GI doc who can monitor what truly works for him, since he's flying blind as an asymptomatic patient.

sorry - there JAck - but I'll stick with the doctor's orders for now (for many of the reasons Dom pointed out below) - GERDS is a serious condition & is not to be taken lightly

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

I have regularly scheduled visits every 3 months to monitor the condition. The Doctor has clearly stated (& internet checking has verified this) that the only way to keep the problem at bay (there is no magic cure) is through diet & lifestyle changes,

Yes.
Oatmeal is fantastic at fighting it.
If you read the "What's Today's Men" thread - you'll notice I've been eating that most mornings.
