This Logbook Will Simply Amaze you - The mystery and history of the White Eagle that sailed out of Canarsie NY in the 1930's-

I love these two. I've come to discover that he was considered one of the best of his time with books like this. I wonder, was he doing a rough sketch at sea and then a cleaner copy when he returned. Notice the detail on the number of poles. I'm not that familiar with the inshore and offshore of the Grave Yard, Sea Bright NJ, but these sure intrigue me.

I know the youngsters that grew up in the pre-depth finder, Loran and GPS days wouldn't understand this, but I still have that pre-technology discipline to immediately take ranges when you happen upon a new inshore spot. After I get my ranges down, I then hit the MARK button on the GPS.

Of course I name my ranges, and I do have a bit of fun with that. Some of my spots' names

The Hacienda - based on a very Spanish looking house
The Mansion - based on a very large family estate
Double Nickles - a bump that comes up to 55'
The Bambino - a bump that comes up to 60'
Twin Peaks - a double bump
Etc...

I was able (hopefully) to determine that the Captains name was Connie Rank with the possible middle name of William. Unfortunately I was unable to conjure up anything else by way of Google.

That's interesting. That explains the letters on his name Con -

Here are a few more with just his handwriting. And look at how precise they had to run. I've read all about before but this somehow is bringing it to life.

Although it doesn't have the magnificent drawings, here's something you history buffs, here's a link to the US Commissioner of Fisheries 1929 publication of Gulf of Maine Fishing Grounds. It's all built on ranges, some that I've actually used. It's an interactive map. When you click on a ground, the descriptive text w/ranges pops up.
