Tick Bite Visits to the ER are on the rise

I don't hunt until a second frost and always use permethrin. No deer in SE Nassau but mice and other mammals carry them.
The Deer are apparently close by……..

Yes, white-tailed deer are present in and around Massapequa, NY. While traditionally more common on the North Shore and further east on Long Island, sightings in Nassau County towns like Massapequa have become increasingly frequent as development pushes them into smaller wooded patches. [1, 2, 3]
Key areas & details to know:
  • Local Sightings: Deer are frequently spotted in the wooded areas and borders of the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway (Route 135) and near local greenbelts.
  • Nearby Parks: If you are looking to spot them, nearby wildlife preserves and protected spaces like Bethpage State Park have active deer populations.
  • Safety & Precautions: Because populations have grown, drivers should use caution—especially at dawn and dusk when deer are most active. The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation handles local wildlife concerns if animals become trapped or pose a hazard in residential neighborhoods. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]

Yes, there have been very occasional sightings 3 miles north of me by the Island Recreational pool store on Hicksville Rd. They apparently have traversed the side of 135 to get there. Now I am supprised that they have not used the bicycle path and trail from Bethpage State Park all the way down past the Massapequa Reservoir to Caroons (Massapequa) Lake on Merrick road for its much wider wooded sections.

Agreed, there’s not much distance from Bethpage State Park and the trail leading down to the lake. And you have Peninsula Golf, & Tapspusha Preserve so there is some acreage to support some deer,

Peninsula Golf would be quite a stretch, Tackapausha is possible but the green trail from the Cold Spring Harbor hatchery through Woodbury, Bethpage State Park (and the Restoration) to the Reservoir and on down to Caroon's would have them crossing few big roads excepting 24 and 27. Add to Christmas list: get more permethrin.
