Ticks

Definitely a bad year for ticks, even with several days cold temps and nights of frost. The three deer we killed were loaded with ticks, I know that ticks are common on deer but this was absolutely crazy how many were on them. Be safe guys and definitely check yourself.

its why I don't hunt anymore until a second frost and even then I am fully "permethrin'd." Simply stated, the activity is not worth getting a potentially life altering disease. Not to me.

I’ve seen tick’s before but this was crazy how many there were and upstate has had quite a few frost, yes not worth getting any disease after I was done field dressing clothes came off sprayed them all down and hung them outside

Actually haven’t seen any in a few years during our nuisance hunts. But in 8 hunts in 2023 i only saw one deer that i jumped while driving in, and only two in 2022, harvesting one. Poor little ticks must be starving.

Doubtful. Because of a federal grant we basically can only hunt weekends and holidays (or nights which we won’t do.). When in the reserves I had a built in excuse to get out of weddings, christenings, birthdays etc. no more, lol. Will start getting our hours to stay on the 2024 list in January Hoping to do one more day the weekend b4 Christmas. Would autumn bowhunt out east but for this thread’s title.

I see ticks year round in the rail yards at both Greenport and Montauk, no matter how cold it gets. Had a turkey run up and try to steal a coworker's bagel, and it's neck was loaded with blood engorged ticks. Have been using several dedicated sets of Premethrin soaked boots and clothes and have been lucky so far, since my last bulls-eye bite in 2018. They laugh at DEET, but the toxic stuff (Premethrin) seems to do the job nicely.
