Every season I like to take a new technique and try to become proficient at the use of that particular bait or style. This season I chose the "Ned" rig. I am a tad behind on the use of this bait and I wanted to catch up. Its said that if you absolutely have to catch a bass, the Ned rig is the way to go.

The rig is basically a small stick bait on a jighead. Approx. 3in. long. with a jig head weight anywhere from 1/16 to 1/2oz. The stick-bait of choice used for this rig is a Z-man TRD. Two great things about the Z-man product compared to say a Senko are, 1. its made of that elastec material that is tougher then any other plastic in durability. 20 fish on a single bait is not uncommon.The second redeeming factor of this product is that it floats. This is what makes the rig so deadly ! The jig-head used with a Ned rig is of the mushroom shaped variety that fits perfect against the bait and helps it stand up on the bottom. Its available in both standard and with a wire weed-guard.

With working this bait the old adage less is more fits perfect. When cast out and allowed to settle to the bottom the bait will stand-up with its stubby little profile just shimming in the water. Deadly ! Worked in short small drags or hops depending on the mood of the fish is all that is required.

My first few times using this bait in some of the most heavily pressured ponds on L.I. in the cold water of early spring resulted in no less then half a dozen fish on any particular trip. To say I am impressed is an understatement. They would grab the bait and just swim away with it and refuse to let it go. A few times I tried to make them drop the bait and the fish would not let go.

No giants but decent average fish for where and when...

Heres one ever notice that after a few days those dumb just stocked trout wont even look at a inline spinners or tin you mite even see them following it? Here is how to make them stupid again put a drop of any of the available scents on the lures you will notice the difference .I use smelly jelly the bass feast liquid.One drop will last a while (try not to get any on your clothes thats unless you dont mind smelling like bunker chum scampi )

Thanks for the tip. I start this week!

I have to admit though, I have yet to out perform a senko fished wacky style this time of year. I don't give anything else much of a chance. I will if the senko isn't doing it, but that's rare. That's for both large mouth and smallies.

I am going to be armed with your tip above but I honestly hope I don't need to ?

As fate would happen a few bites on the wacky so I reached in my bag tricks and put on the 1/16th Ned and sure enough 4-fish in an hour. The biggest was just 1 1/2.

That is one great tip.
