Got another chance to enjoy the unbelievable weather on Monday and headed out with a friend first thing. Got several reports from friends that there were plenty of short bass being taken both east and west of the inlet in 60-80ft on umbrella rigs. I'm really not much of a trolling guy but decided to bring the gear and give it a go. We went straight south and looked for birds and it seemed east was looking better and most of the fleet was heading that way. Dropped the umbrellas back near the pencil and started trolling east in 70ft. We were definitely marking bait, and the occasional grouping of bass. I had all green on one, all white on another and we also tried a deep diver as well as spoons. The white umbrella did very well, almost couldn't keep it in the water. The green had no hits along with the spoons and divers. After my whites got beat up a bunch we through out a multicolor holographic one which also did very well. Most fish were 24-26 inch. We did manage one 30 incher and got another on the surface when we happened upon a blowup. Trolled all the way to ocean beach and then packed it up and went in. The fleet was out in front of ocean beach and mostly jigging and looked slow. Hopefully the fish school up more and we can get on that late season jig bite before they are gone.
