Ward Melville 2025

Chartering with a knowledge captain is like cliff notes for a long book. Greatly reduces the learning curve on all matters from rigs to tides to boat maintenance.

Not to mention you'll end up making a friend for life!

Hoping the guy that sells the little minnow shaped plain lead jig heads usually in the far northwest corner of the cafeteria comes back. John something from Lindenhurst ?

I've bought a few knives from "the knife guy" as well. He sometimes has the stainless ICEL 6 and 7" fillet knives from Portugal for a very few bux. An excellent alternative to the Dexter "white handles," at half the price. Highly recommended.

And while we're on the subject of knives, I've switched over to the Cold Steel 6" semi-flexible boning knife for blackfish filleting. German stainless steel, takes a razor-sharp edge, and holds it very well. Its handle design really fits my medium-sized hands well. A relatively inexpensive piece, in case you occasionally drop knives overboard too.

Thank you for the recommendations! I will email him Glenn Luckey at [email protected] to see if I can have him bring up things I was looking for.

BTW: My daughter fiancé needs a good fillet knife. I was thinking of getting him the Dexter 2333-9. Or maybe something a bit shorter as that knife is very long. Since this is a gift for him, if you guys have something else you can recommend, I like to know. I am leaning to a larger, thin blade knife as he catches big fish like Striped Bass and Tuna. Recommendations welcomed.

I still like my very old J. Marttini Finland Rapala fillet knife. 14 inches overall and 9-inch blade. Maybe from using it all these years, I got used to it, but it seems perfect for me.

BG - I like the Dexter 1378 for bass filleting.

As far as fluke filleting - I use the 9" 2333-9 because I fillet flatfish from the tail. A cut behind the pectoral fins and at the tail with my 6" serrated Dexter, then I go up each side of the spine with the long knife and slice outward. I know, many don't think this the "proper" method, but it works for me and has for better than 50 seasons. Watch here:

Show is approaching fast hope see you there. Spring season is around the corner

No seminar schedule yet
Yes, they are really slow getting the word out this year. I received the tentative schedule from Bob Wilson over a month ago and confirmed my seminar. But I suspect some of the other speakers have been slow to reply to Bob.

If it helps anyone, I know I will be speaking during the first slot at 9 am in the big Auditorium. My talk titled "North Fork Grand Slam" been updated this year with some new content and a section specifically addressing Tides and Currents which has been requested by many.

Hope to see you there.
Capt. Mike

BTW: They used to let us in early. I get a parking spot at 7:30 ish, eat a breakfast sandwish and wait. Last year, for some unknown reason, they made us circle around. For anyone that has info on this....PLEASE ask them to go back to the old way. Why they changed it made no sense to me.

Missed last year for oral surgery and not going this year but in 2023 i parked in the lot at 745 and had a thermos of tea.
