House Democrats propose end to US troop protection in Gulf after OPEC cut

Three House Democrats have introduced legislation to end U.S. troop protection in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in response to news this week that the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies will slash oil production.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which together comprise about 30 percent of global crude oil reserves, have some 5,000 U.S. troops stationed there. In addition to removing those troops and American missile defense systems from the two countries, the legislation introduced by Reps. Sean Casten (D-Ill.), Tom Malinowski (D-N.J.) and Susan Wild (D-Pa.) would move all U.S. technology and defense systems elsewhere in the region.

“This decision is a turning point in our relationship with our Gulf partners. If Saudi Arabia and the UAE hope to maintain a relationship with the United States that has been overwhelmingly beneficial to them, they must show a greater willingness to work with us — not against us — in advancing what is now our most urgent national security objective: the defeat of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine,” the three said in a statement.

“Instead, by significantly boosting global oil prices, OPEC’s decision appears designed to increase Russia’s oil export revenues, enabling Putin to continue his war crimes in Ukraine, and undercutting Western sanctions,” they added.

The bill follows other Democratic lawmakers who harshly criticized the decision by OPEC+ to cut oil production by 2 million barrels per day — about 2 percent of global supplies — a move that prompted some lawmakers to call for a reevaluation of the U.S.-Saudi relationship.

Russia's soldiers on a crucial front are mainly retreating from Ukraine's advances rather than staying to fight, UK intel says

  • Ukraine is making gains in the southern Kherson region, pushing back Russia.
  • The UK defense ministry said Russian troops there were typically retreating rather than fighting.
  • Russia may be falling back to dig in at crucial defensible locations, like the city of Kherson.
Russian troops are mostly retreating from a key region of Ukraine, rather than staying to fight, the UK's Ministry of Defence said on Thursday.

The ministry said in an intelligence update that Ukraine had begun new efforts to retake the south-eastern region of Kherson on Sunday, and that it was making some gains and moving the front line with Russia.

It said Ukraine had not yet threatened Russia's main defensive positions, and that Russians were mostly choosing to retreat rather than oppose the Ukrainians.

I have nothing against fossil fuels or fracking...but we do need certain restrictions. This stuff can cause havoc in the eco system when things are done wrong, and I am against using federal lands and parks for short term gains for mining or drilling. The real good quality oil that the Arabs produce will always be imported...we just don't have that quality....quantity is not the problem...that's why we will always import...Venezuela and the Saudis are 1+2 in quality (WTI West Texas intermediate is cheaper than BRENT)

Brent crude is the benchmark used for the wider light oil market – ie Europe, Africa and the Middle East, while WTI is the benchmark for the US light oil market. Other countries often use both Brent and WTI as benchmarks to value their crude oil.

U.S. Aims to Turn Taiwan Into Giant Weapons Depot

WASHINGTON — American officials are intensifying efforts to build a giant stockpile of weapons in Taiwan after studying recent naval and air force exercises by the Chinese military around the island, according to current and former officials.

The exercises showed that China would probably blockade the island as a prelude to any attempted invasion, and Taiwan would have to hold out on its own until the United States or other nations intervened, if they decided to do that, the current and former officials say.

But the effort to transform Taiwan into a weapons depot faces challenges. The United States and its allies have prioritized sending weapons to Ukraine, which is reducing those countries’ stockpiles, and arms makers are reluctant to open new production lines without a steady stream of long-term orders.

And it is unclear how China might respond if the United States accelerates shipments of weapons to Taiwan, a democratic, self-governing island that Beijing claims is Chinese territory.

U.S. officials are determining the quantity and types of weapons sold to Taiwan by quietly telling Taiwanese officials and American arms makers that they will reject orders for some large systems in favor of a greater number of smaller, more mobile weapons. The Biden administration announced Sept. 2 that it had approved its sixth weapons package for Taiwan — a $1.1 billion sale that includes 60 Harpoon coastal anti-ship missiles. U.S. officials are also discussing how to streamline the sale-and-delivery process.

Congrats

to Galway man Damian Browne who has become the first person to row from New York to Galway.
?

The former rugby player spent 112 days rowing across the Atlantic and came ashore on the rocks at Furbo Beach this morning.
We hope he enjoys a hearty fry this morning as he celebrates with family and friends

I didn't realize you thought murder was an acceptable solution to inconvenient people. So, it would be okay with you if we set up machine guns at the border?
Show me anyone that got an abortion that was convicted of murder. It's not murder.

Typical conservative tactic. Use an absurd example to bolster your POV. I also noticed you conviently ignored the meat of the post. So how many unwanted babies did you adopt? After all we gotta protect the babies.

Sorry for the late reply. Was hunting and I don't get a signal where I hunt. When I'm at a place I do get a signal this is not my first choice to go to online.

Seems like it’s excepted as murder when it’s convenient. (The Unborn Victims of Violence Act of 2004 (Public Law 108-212) is a United States law that recognizes an embryo or fetus in utero as a legal victim, if they are injured or killed during the commission of any of over 60 listed federal crimes of violence.)
He’s hunting, enjoy the kill. ?

So, the law is your only definition of morality? The law is often a poor reflection of what's right and wrong. i.e. slavery was once legal, and thanks to asset forfeiture it's currently legal for police to rob people. Rick's posting notwithstanding, just because the law hasn't caught up with all of it yet doesn't make killing the unborn moral.

BTW, illegal immigrants are, ummm,... what's the word?... Oh yeah,.. ILLEGAL. How come their presence don't seem to bother you if you're such an adherent to the law? And since you seem to think that I'm somehow accountable for other people's mistakes and decisions, how many illegals have you provided food and shelter and healthcare for? Or do you just hire them to mow your lawn?

Some day people will catch on...sending out free money to combat inflation?
