Russia's invasion of Ukraine puts tech giants in an untenable situation. According to the posts on social media, they must choose their side.

Elon Musk, the CEO of high-end electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla (TSLA) - Get Tesla Inc Report, and incidentally the richest man in the world, finds himself in a delicate position.

He was personally questioned on Saturday on Twitter by the Ukrainian Vice Prime Minister and minister of digital transformation Mykhailo Fedorov.

"@elonmusk, while you try to colonize Mars - Russia try to occupy Ukraine! While your rockets successfully land from space - Russian rockets attack Ukrainian civil people! We ask you to provide Ukraine with Starlink stations and to address sane Russians to stand," Fedorov wrote on his Twitter account.

The post has been liked by over 66,000 users at the time of writing and has been retweeted over 10,000 times.

Starlink is Available in Ukraine

Several hours after the post, Musk replied directly to Fedorov, letting him understand that he had reacted and that no doubt the lag time between the query and his response was due to the fact that he wanted to provide a practical solution to the problem that was posed to him.

"Starlink service is now active in Ukraine. More terminals en route," Musk replied.

As many comments to the billionaire's post pointed out, by allowing Ukrainians access to Starlink, one of the fastest, most robust satellite internet systems, Musk and his company SpaceX make it impossible for Russia to disable the Ukrainian internet access fully without cyber attacking foreign data centers.

"TRANSLATION - " Ukraine people have access to the fastest satellite internet system ever created. Russia can not disable the Ukrainian internet access fully without cyber attacking foreign data centers," commented one user.

As is often the case with Elon Musk fans, most of the comments were glowing.
"STRONG MOVE," one user wrote.

"Great move. Elon is a smart man," another added.

In any case, Fedorov seemed delighted and was quick to announce the news on his account by retweeting Musk's response.
"Starlink terminals are coming to Ukraine! Thank you @elonmusk, thank you everyone, who supported Ukraine!" he said.

Putin orders nuclear deterrent forces on high alert

Russia President Vladimir Putin ordered Russian nuclear forces Sunday to be on high alert, a dramatic escalation of tensions with the West that brought immediate condemnation from the U.S. as Russia continues its full-scale assault on Ukraine.

Putin, announcing the move on Russian state television, called it a response to “aggressive statements” and tough financial sections from NATO countries. The extraordinary step raises the threat of nuclear warfare entering the conflict in Ukraine, a scenario the White House has previously said it has not assessed.

Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. ambassador to the UN, condemned the action as “unacceptable" in an appearance on CBS' "Face the Nation."

Putin directed the Russian defense minister and the chief of the military’s General Staff to put the nuclear deterrent forces in a “special regime of combat duty” during a meeting with top officials.

“Western countries aren’t only taking unfriendly actions against our country in the economic sphere, but top officials from leading NATO members made aggressive statements regarding our country,” Putin said in televised comments.

At the onset of the conflict with Ukraine, Putin warned that any nation that would “hinder us” will face" such consequences that you have never encountered in your history,” although he did not elaborate what he meant.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

WASHINGTON – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday announced a dramatic about-face in Berlin’s defense policy, vowing to anchor a 100 billion (US $113 billion) euro defense fund in the country’s constitution and exceed a NATO-wide annual spending goal.

Prompted by Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the measures amount to a stunning reversal of decades of anemic defense funding, grown from the post-Cold War expectation that the country’s military posture would take a back seat to Germany’s economic and diplomatic might.

Speaking at a special session of the Bundestag, Germany’s parliament, Scholz said moves to rebuild the country’s armed forces would amount to an “unprecedented, common effort” to which he would dedicate the power of his office.

The additional funds would help establish Germany as a “reliable and capable partner” with an “appropriate” role in the NATO alliance, Scholz said.

NATO allies have long pushed Germany to increase its defense spending to 2% of GDP, a goal enshrined at the 2014 alliance summit. Berlin currently spends upwards of $50 billion, or around 1.5% of GDP, on defense annually. Future German defense spending, Scholz said, would be “more” than 2%.

The chancellor also mentioned a number of big-ticket acquisition programs that would be pushed forward in the course of the country’s defense uptick. For example, a new atomic weapons-capable aircraft under NATO nuclear-sharing doctrine is on the table — Scholz named the F-35 as a candidate — as a replacement for the Air Force’s aging Tornado jets.

Also considered “priority projects,” according to Scholz, are the Future Combat Air System, developed in cooperation with France and Spain, as well as the “Eurodrone,” contracts for which were signed this week.

final push on Kyiv?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Satellite imagery taken on Sunday showed a large deployment of Russian ground forces including tanks moving in the direction of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv from approximately 40 miles (64 km) away, a private U.S. company said.

The images released by Maxar Technologies Inc showed a deployment comprised of hundreds of military vehicles and extending more than 3.25 miles (5 km), Maxar said.

The convey was situated northeast of the Ukrainian city of Ivankiv and contained fuel, logistics and armored vehicles including tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and self-propelled artillery, it said.
