West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin (D) poured cold water on President Biden’s attempt to revive the core elements of his Build Back Better agenda, questioning the president’s claim that passing a $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion spending package would “lower costs” for most Americans.

“They just can’t help themselves,” Manchin quipped when asked by reporters after Biden’s State of the Union speech whether he was surprised by the president’s effort to try to use the moment to try to revive his stalled climate and social spending plan.

“I don’t know where that came from,” he joked.

I’ve never found out that you can lower costs by spending more,” he said.

That answer prompted Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), who was walking alongside Manchin across the Capitol Rotunda and sat with Manchin during the address, to exclaim, “You can’t say it better than that.”

The Ukrainian Ambassador to the UN Kyslytsya delivered his speech to the General Assembly in English but read the messages in the original Russian. A transcript of the simultaneous translation is provided below:

MOTHER: Why has it been so long since you responded? Are you really in training exercises?

SON: Mama, I'm no longer in Crimea. I'm not in training sessions.

MOTHER: Where are you then? Papa is asking whether I can send you a parcel.

SON: What kind of a parcel, Mama, can you send me?

MOTHER: What are you talking about? What happened?

SON: Mama, I'm in Ukraine. There is a real war raging here. I'm afraid. We are bombing all of the cities together, even targeting civilians. We were told that they would welcome us, and they are falling under our armored vehicles, throwing themselves under the wheels, and not allowing us to pass. They call us fascists. Mama, this is so hard.

After reading the messages, Kyslytsya asked the assembly to "visualize the magnitude of the tragedy" caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

He also denounced Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to order Russia's nuclear forces to high alert as "madness" and implied that any use of nuclear weapons by Putin would be suicidal.

"If [Putin] wants to kill himself, he doesn't need to use nuclear arsenal. He has to do what the guy in Berlin did in a bunker in May 1945," Kyslytsya said, drawing a comparison between Putin and Adolf Hitler.

In an interview on the Yahoo News “Skullduggery” podcast, Daniel Hoffman — for years, one of the CIA’s top experts on Russia — said the Russian president is “not the Vladimir Putin I was tracking back in the day at the CIA. He’s a different guy.” He says that Putin has dug himself into such a deep hole with the Ukraine invasion that he now no longer believes he has any choice but to level the country.

Swedish defence minister calls Russian violation of airspace 'unacceptable'

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Four Russian fighter jets briefly entered Swedish territory over the Baltic Sea on Wednesday, the Swedish Armed Forces said, sparking a swift condemnation from Sweden's defence minister.

Two Russian SU27 and two SU24 fighter jets briefly entered Swedish airspace east of the Swedish island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, Sweden's Armed Forces said in a statement, adding that Swedish JAS 39 Gripen jets were sent to document the violation.

"The Russian violation of Swedish airspace is of course completely unacceptable," Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist told news agency TT. "It will lead to a firm diplomatic response from Sweden. Swedish sovereignty and territory must always be respected."

Sweden's Armed Forces said the situation was under control and that the incident showed preparedness was good.

"In the light of the current situation we view this event very seriously," it said on its website,

Sweden on Sunday said it would send military aid, including 5,000 anti-tank weapons to Ukraine, the first time since 1939 that Sweden has sent weapons to a country at war.
