The newest Jihad seems to be war against single family homes, with blurbs like the one quoted below all over the news/press. I do feel for you folks, but whatever happens, you don't want to consider moving Maine, it's way too cold, provincial, poor cell phone coverage, no Costcos, etc.

Yes, this is a defense post, but I'll be damned if I start hearing about needless local expenditures driven by those who will demand public services that will raise our property taxes and change the bucolic nature of Maine life. It's enough fighting off the impact from the Northern Massachusetts, I mean Southern Maine contingent trying to get crazy azz laws, initiatives passed that will drive up taxes...

HUNTINGTON, N.Y. — After four decades of unprincipled opposition, this affluent suburb on Long Island’s northern shore agreed in December to allow the construction of 146 subsidized town homes and apartments on a scrubby lot next to an electrical substation. Four decades to build 146 homes.

The New York region is in the throes of a housing crisis. The paucity of construction in recent decades has driven prices to record heights, and the resulting shortage of affordable housing is constraining regional economic growth and destabilizing the lives of millions of families. By one recent estimate, the region needs to add 772,000 homes for lower-income households.

The search for sites tends to focus on New York City. What doesn’t get enough attention is the need to build more housing in the suburbs, especially in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Long Island residents may not realize that they live in an unusual place. It’s not the prevalence of single-family subdivisions that sets Nassau and Suffolk apart from other big-city suburbs. No, it’s the scarcity of other kinds of housing.

LONDON (Reuters) -Russian soldiers who seized the site of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster drove their armoured vehicles without radiation protection through a highly toxic zone called the "Red Forest", kicking up clouds of radioactive dust, workers at the site said.

The two sources said soldiers in the convoy did not use any anti-radiation gear. The second Chernobyl employee said that was "suicidal" for the soldiers because the radioactive dust they inhaled was likely to cause internal radiation in their bodies.

Ukraine's state nuclear inspectorate said on Feb. 25 there had been an increase in radiation levels at Chernobyl as a result of heavy military vehicles disturbing the soil. But until now, details of exactly what happened had not emerged.

The two Ukrainian workers who spoke to Reuters were on duty when Russian tanks entered Chernobyl on Feb. 24 and took control of the site, where staff are still responsible for the safe storage of spent nuclear fuel and supervising the concrete-encased remains of the reactor that blew up in 1986.

Both men said they had witnessed Russian tanks and other armoured vehicles moving through the Red Forest, which is the most radioactively contaminated part of the zone around Chernobyl, around 100 km (65 miles) north of Kyiv.

The site got its name when dozens of square kilometres of pine trees turned red after absorbing radiation from the 1986 explosion, one of the world's worst nuclear disasters.

Ukraine is seeking concrete security guarantees during peace negations in Turkey, including promises of military assistance during a future conflict from the world's "leading armies," including those with nuclear weapons, in exchange for adopting neutral status.

"The Treaty on Security Guarantees essentially assumes, not in theory, but in practice, to obtain an effective instrument for protecting our territory and sovereignty," Mihailo Podolyuak, top adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said of the talks. "The guarantor countries become, so to speak, the leading armies of the world, including those with a nuclear component, which take on specific legal obligations — to intervene in any conflict on the territory of Ukraine, to immediately supply weapons."

kraine proposed that it would remain militarily neutral but was also seeking "mandatory entry into the single market of the European Union as a full-fledged member."


Podolyuak stressed the importance of NATO countries such as the U.S., U.K., Turkey and Germany being signatories of any potential treaty, arguing that their support would help "avoid the traditional Russian non-binding nature of legal treaties."
