Fiery Explosion at Jose Cuervo Tequila Factory in Mexico Kills at Least 5​

An explosion at a Jose Cuervo tequila distillery in Mexico on Tuesday sparked a fire and killed five workers, officials said.

The explosion and fire in the city of Tequila, Mexico, about 40 miles by road northwest of Guadalajara in the western state of Jalisco, prompted evacuations. The fire was later contained.

The Jalisco authorities later said in a statement that five people had been killed and two others were wounded, one seriously.

The fire broke out at the La Rojeña Factory late Tuesday afternoon, according to a statement by Casa Cuervo, the company that owns Jose Cuervo and other brands.

The explosion led to the collapse of two containers of tequila, Víctor Hugo Roldán, the general director of Jalisco’s Civil Protection Department, told reporters. Each held nearly 60,000 gallons of alcohol. The cause of the explosion was being investigated, he said.

After the explosion, a photograph of the scene released by the Jalisco authorities showed a damaged metallic container the size of a small house. It was lying crumpled on the ground.

Jose Cuervo has described the city of Tequila as the “birthplace of bottled tequila.” The brand’s namesake, José Antonio de Cuervo, developed early distilling processes at La Rojeña. His son later received the first license to produce and distribute the spirit.
